Where the hell did this lot come from i thought we were done for this morning so took kids out Sledging to Buxton  it started snowing lightly didn't think much of it.

As i got walking across the field with my lads it startwd picking up i stayed about 45 mins until i realised it was getting heavier and made a decsision to leave.

It was settling on the roads stopped off to get some more petrol a nervy drive back over the A6 with heavy snow blowing across the road.

Managed to get over the A6 which was getting dicey at the top and then on the way back between Baslow and Owler Bar the roads were getting bad with blowing snow drifting and blowing snow will be a big problem on the tops later i dare say.

I was relieved to make it home to be honest that will teach me to write things off too soon.

A nice surprise anyway, only a light coating in Bramley though, even though it has been snowing for a few hours now. Shame it wasnt heavy, not really anything to measure :)

Lets face it, what a complete dogs dinner todays forecast was lol, just shows how snow makes fools of us all, including the experts. Total miss this morning and then no one forecast this development this afternoon..

Looks lovely and Christmassy now though out there with all the lights and white ground :D

Picked up again here now as the front strengthens again slightly. Dunno how much more we can squeeze out of it though.

I'd given up looking for past couple of hours, busy wrapping presents, and snow's coming down fast and everywhere is white now. :yahoo:

At the moment it does although I suspect that will change a bit nearer the time looking at what is presently modelled for Thursday morning?  I would not rule out at least a wintry mix for our region.

Only a possibility but the risk is certainly there.

Edit just noticed the snow risk for Thursday has been mentioned in the Model Thread this evening.

Even a mention of the dreaded s word (not snow!)  :pardon:

I really think I need a New Year's resolution - not to bother with models or weather forecasts. It's pretty obvious that even less than 24 hours before a snow event, it can all go pear-shaped. It's the hope that kills you. If you don't expect it then you can't be disappointed!

Anyway, the best snowfalls always occur when you least expect them.

some snow showers likely for the North East & Yorkshire coast (and 50 miles inland) this evening ........a new covering on the Yorkshire Wolds and North York Moors to be expected perhaps ?

Didn't see this one coming!

Currently 0.7c after a low of -4.8c, the coldest night since Feb 2013 here and parts of the North York Moors fell to -9c overnight.

I can see the Wolds from my garden and they already have a nice white tinge to them so a nice top up wouldn't go a miss. :)

Really cold day.

Highest temperature of the day was -1.6C

Was down to -7.8C last night and didn't get above -7C until 10am. Proper Ice day.

It is already down to -4.5C, just hoping it doesn't go lower than last night as we start to lose animals when it gets below -10C.

Well well well the plot thickens...

All of a sudden the 12z runs have made the end of the week and into the weekend very interesting indeed.

We now have snow chances at the weekend as well as Wednesday night into Thursday.  These charts should be taken with the usual pinch of salt but who knows what might happen if the models are underestimating the depth of cold over the UK as appears to be the case at present?

It certainly looks like the Atlantic is being held further back as a result of a residual wedge of heights into Iceland and Greenland meaning some wintry surprises could pop up at short notice over the coming days.

In the meantime absolutely bitter tonight inland with some wintry showers persisting well into the night across the Eastern half of the region.  Wrap up warm folks!  :cold:
