Light snow showing on radar over Barnsley but nothing obvious falling from the sky!

Woke up leaden skies and light rain showers rather than the expected frosty start. Alarming it was fairly mild at 3.4C. Anyway went up into the peak district for a walk. Rain at fox house as well and went to WYE dale just down from the A6. At least saw some falling snow while out although by the time I got back this had turned to sleet or wet snow and a steady thaw of lying stuff. Not sure about tonight's snow risk. considering I had to go high up to get some snow this morning. A quick look at some of the factors you need to get snow say firmly no. See John Holmes guide on this. The rainfall is simply to far behind the cold air. If it's heavy enough it may do the trick but the morning forecast said mostly light rain so not confident in that either.

Looking better than it did earlier on. Would be a lot better if the rain was coming in faster.

Well after a cold wet dull day yesterday with wet snow in the small hours, which had all gone by 10:00 around here its still cold and wet this morning, 4C when I left home. The milder air is taking its time to reach the East Coast

We had about 15 or 20 m of very light snow about 1230 in Snowball Plantation today. It even laid a tiny bit.

When I say light I mean light.

Edited by yaffle
to emphasise lightness. It was very light.

Yes i drove to work in York around 1.30pm and there were small snowflakes fluttering down. Good job I had my winter tyres on!

Speaking of Snowball Plantation, do you mean the one at the end of Stockton on Forest, if so I used to drive to there when I lived in Heworth as it had a huge security light at the front and it was awesome to the snowfall, sure I have some pics somewhere from 09/10. @yaffle

@vizzy2004 yep that's the place and the security lights are pretty intense. We were there for the Friday night snowfall in January 2013 which had pretty much gone by Sunday when I got home. We were out walking in it that night and it was great, huge swirling flakes coming through the trees.

Hmmm was is 2013? My memory is rubbish, I really should write this stuff down.

Well in whats been the most frustrating winter that I can remember we have to be thankful for the tiny crumbs we've been given......Tomorrow looks very cold and will be Sheffields first ice day in a long time. Looking forward to it, especialy as windchill will make it feel well below 0 :cold:

Hi Chris, similar forecast for here, although not sure it'll go down as an official ice as frustratingly its 2c currently and not forecast to drop below freezing until 3am.

Not bad mate, weathers a bit boring with a mainly snowless winter so far, even been poor on the hills.

Wondering if proper snow is even possible anymore!

yeah its been shocking, and we thought last winter was bad lol. Least we've seen a few flakes on a few days but for me not to have had much snow it really is poor! I cant even remember what deep snow looks like :p

Yup first ice day since feb 2013. Sad to say the cold spell looks like going out in a whimper but then winter has been a huge whimper this year.

An ice day is an achievement, not easily achieved, and there is plenty of winter left still.

No ice day here as we didn't drop below freezing till 3am with a max of 0.7c at 1am.

However not getting above freezing all day is quite impressive nonetheless and although we had no snow I did enjoy it as a weather enthusiast.

Currently -1.9c with a windchill of -7c.

No ice day today. It try very hard. The rain is going to be interesting temperatures falling away at the moment so may fall as snow. Temp 1.5C.  It took 24 hours for a frost to form and the ponds have only just this morning considered getting ice on them despite a low -4C.

People seem to be getting very animated on the MOD thread. Is it worth getting my hopes up again?
