only midnight and midday though, think it was at its windiest in the morning

I was just about to post those but as we can see, the winds were from a westerly direction and it intensified over land, whereas tonight's storm is southerly winds. The channel coast breaks up the flow. The south coast will get a battering though!

How did that person who contacted him know a hurricane was coming?

I think her son was in the States (was he studying meteorology and doing his own forecasts?) and he called his mum to give her a warning.

Should be the head of the met office with a prediction like that

Not quite right,  the storm was due to track across Northern France but unexpectedly changed track only a few hours before. I suppose there was less data available back then. Of course it was never a "hurricane" just an intense storm.

Pretty much sums it up. Why some people are still mocking that forecast nearly 30 years later is beyond me.

Not mocking . I was just stating tonight reminded me of that night it is a big moment certainly in my life and whilst scary at the time I do look back on it with a bit of humour  . I'm sure Mr Fish would take no offence . But a good point in just how far we have come.

It's slightly damp outside. Though bbc don't seem to be going for windy.

Smartie over in Ukww is now hinting at the possibility of a sting jet developing.

Winds just veered round from ENE to SSE, with a gust of 23mph. Pressure 993mb and falling rapidly.

Can anyone say in really simple terms what that might mean for us over here on the coast?

Very wet and windy but you should miss the worst. But... keep an eye out on the Met Office warnings.

Uh oh... :bomb:

Uh oh indeed. I've been following developments on other websites and the possibility of a sting jet keeps being mentioned, and may well occur.

Earlier forecasts suggested gusts of 70-80mph along the South Coast, more recent projections seem to suggest gusts of 90mph.
