I was just about to post those but as we can see, the winds were from a westerly direction and it intensified over land, whereas tonight's storm is southerly winds. The channel coast breaks up the flow. The south coast will get a battering though!

Not quite right,  the storm was due to track across Northern France but unexpectedly changed track only a few hours before. I suppose there was less data available back then. Of course it was never a "hurricane" just an intense storm.

Pretty much sums it up. Why some people are still mocking that forecast nearly 30 years later is beyond me.

Not mocking . I was just stating tonight reminded me of that night it is a big moment certainly in my life and whilst scary at the time I do look back on it with a bit of humour  . I'm sure Mr Fish would take no offence . But a good point in just how far we have come.

Uh oh indeed. I've been following developments on other websites and the possibility of a sting jet keeps being mentioned, and may well occur.

Earlier forecasts suggested gusts of 70-80mph along the South Coast, more recent projections seem to suggest gusts of 90mph.
