That looks pretty tasty!

I think those charts show a good guidance as to eastern districts of the West Country to be potentially affected.

Note the shield of doooooom over Bristol.

BANK!!!

Oh and the question about rain being forecast and we end up with snow.... I don't recall rain being forecast but I do remember we were only supposed to get a dusting, inch or two at most in February 2009, we ended up with a good 10 inches up here.

Quite possibly, & that would be more notable in a NW/NNW'ly as modelled towards the end of the week.

We've had snow showers here from a n/nw wind before now, Dec 2010 was a northerly with a NW element, can also remember being hit by snow showers in March one year and that was also from a n/nw wind direction.

All those bemoaning an easterly...... show me one heavy widespread snowstorm for the south west that came about without at least some kind of easterly element entrenching the cold air first???

our very best snowfalls come from Atlantic fronts bumping into cold dry continental air, 90% of the time from an easterly flow.

Thursdays "potential" is a good example in a way, although some may well get lucky, the northerly flow isn't quite cold enough re dew points etc for a guaranteed widespread event.  Whereas if we had entrenched dry cold continental air in place it would be far less marginal.

So even though for us lot an easterly may well be dry initially , it's the breakdown attempts from the west that give us our best shot at real widespread snowfalls :)

Oh I wasn't moaning, just pondering aloud whether it'll amount to anything more than dry cold for here. The battleground scenario is stuff of legend, but for me personally, after nearly 20 years down here, it remains an elusive legend. What seems to happen is dry cold from the east, wet & mild coming from the west and instead of a battleground, the cold gets shoved out the way and we get wet instead of white.

Dec 2010 would have seen snow anywhere at anytime.  That was proper cold.

Your down in Weston anyway, up here, sheltered a little more from the Brecons, plus the urban heat affects of Bristol & Avonmouth industrial estates, I often find I have some of the higher temps around compared to others in the region during a NW/NNW'ly.

All very topographic and localised though.

On a side note, where has our regional modetator gone.

I swear, during busy times like this, Gottolovethisweather was here day in day out keeping us in check.

Now it feels like we are free to say & do what we want.

Bristol just has a full on weather shield! I've been at home during snow and thunderstorms (North Somerset) while there's nothing in Bristol and vice versa. A classic snow case was 17th December 2010 when there was barely 1cm of snow in Bristol with sunny skies, yet 10 miles south in North Somerset it had been snowing off an on all afternon and a decent 6-7cm had accumulated.

I'd agree with that. I work just outside Keynsham, they very rarely get the snow that I get at home, often none at all and if it does snow, no where near as much. The dividing line seems to be Clutton hill, cross over and it's a different world, including fog, frost and rain.
