Update

Issued at:
12:05 on Tue 10 Jan 2017

Valid from:
00:05 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Valid to:
23:55 on Thu 12 Jan 2017

Rain moving eastwards across the south of the UK on Thursday may turn to snow in places. Whilst this is unlikely, there is a small chance of snow settling with disruption to road, rail and air services as well as interruptions to power supplies and other utilities. Associated heavy rain and strong winds may prove additional hazards.

If the area of heavy rain moves further north, this would pull cold air into the system and bring snow to parts of southern England and south Wales. At the same time heavy rain will likely persist in some areas along with the potential for some locally strong winds.

Local Authorities affected and associated warning levels

Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Swansea, Torfaen, Vale of Glamorgan

A lot more showers on the day than modelled I imagine. It will be coming into range of high res Euro4 now later on today so will know more then hopefully.

The latest warning that includes Cardiff and rest of south east Wales is from the low pressure to the south not from showers. Northern extent of that very uncertain which is why it's "very low likelihood" but could be good if we get lucky!

Wont the low kill any wintry showers in the south? And pull in a more westerly atlantic influence?

We have seen many situations like this before and we have had some good snowfall. Hopefully nearer the time, there is enough cold air to mix if that low pushed north. Evaporate cooling (i cant spell) will be our friend here too

On the EURO 4 model @48hrs there does seem to be a frontal wave which would provide increased chances of precipitation (rain/sleet/snow) across southern parts of the UK as it runs east. Worth keeping a close eye on in future runs

This says it all to me especially where it says this is unlikely!!! Higher ground snow lower levels sleet or rain is wot I think will happen but fingers crossed I'm wrong

Happy new year all. Very suspicious of any snow chances coming straight off the back of a milder interlude. For those of us on lower land in the south it's looking like the parameters are just a little too marginal. Best we don't get our hopes up as while the global models have shown promise, the higher res models don't want to give us much to play with at all. Maybe a little back edge sleet from the front passing W to E with the colder air digging in. As @andymusic says, next week should be of more interest. Get the cold in first and see where it takes us. For us snow-starved, lets get it cold and wait it out for some fun from the NW or a battleground event!

Good luck to those in search of something this week though. Get up the Beacons and Snowdonia!

If the low on Thursday is going to give us rain, i'd rather it just stay further south and hedge my bets on the colder showery north west flow instead for snow.

Euro4 high res showing rain for South Wales Thursday. Still looking good for after that mind.

Met all over place concerning the warm sector one met forecast shows the northern edge of the system over the south coast !very interesting if system is 50 miles north.

I was thinking why the weather warning was showing for the West really.  I can't see anything below 100meters.  That's just a guess mind you.  Seems like forecast temperatures have risen a few degrees than originally thought
