Yes, all this marginal crap seems to be far more common these days.

Every time since 2010 we have managed to get anything from a NW'ly, the temperature has inexplicably risen, from the N/NW, almost immediately afterwards. 2014-15 was the worst: starts to snow, settles, NW'ly picks up, rains/melts. Happened about 3 or 4 times. And last January it just rained from a NW'ly with -8 uppers.

In times gone by it would clear from the NW and freeze, not melt. Colder air would follow the snow, now it's warmer air. Something's up with NW'lies these days.

More and more cloud now here.

Convection from irish sea.... when wind swings around.... could be fun and games later on....  convective snow can be the best....  ie heavier localised snow....

Looking at the sky to my northwest I won't be surprised to catch a snow/hail shower soon.

It is, but only a wet brief shower. Although it reached the ground as snow (surprisingly), it's never going to stick unless the temp drops at least 3-4 degrees, and stays there. Evaporative cooling presumably, works to get falling snow, less so lying snow.

Surprisingly that shower developed over land.

Looking at the raintoday radar an organised line has formed from North Wales to the far north of Northern Ireland.

Whilst the Irish sea no doubt had an affect why for some it was rain/sleet, we got to remember the low was deep which created a mild sector which in turn allows temps/dew temps to rise slightly especially with winds coming in from the sea, I knew from experience with the North sea you need uppers of -8 and more to have a chance of seeing snow falling when your close to the sea. Of course other factors come into play such as thicknesses for example.

I think the weather front event went as expected if albeit it was further West than some BBC forecasts suggested. A lot of areas got snowfall but those not far from the coast got sleet or rain, such is life, nothing to do with climate change or anything like that.

Tonight is similar really, expect rain/sleet/hail nearer the coast you are with snow further inland, I suspect convection won't be all that extensive because thicknesses were not as low as last night but the potential for some areas to get a fresh covering is there for sure.

Just patches of snow left around here on shaded grassy areas.

Low to mid level cloud forming off scotland coast to welsh coast. Quite rapid growth too. Not sure of the significance though.IMG_0059.PNG

Liverpool TAF  still going for just snow showers overnight, and it wasn't last night, now between 21:00-09:00.
