Is that at least a light covering?

Going by John Hammond's 19:00 forecast, it looks to me the graphics have updated for those blobs of white to be a bit further Westwards as he alluded too in his 18:30 forecast so places like Manchester/Liverpool could well see snow falling, be very surprised if any settles though.

Looks like the centre of the low will have to be near or on top for evap cooling to take place because the upper air temps are not really going to change, if anything they look like they will get a bit warmer before marginally get cooler but on paper, you do think are those uppers actually cold enough even at some higher levels for snow? Be an interesting night though watching the observations from  this region and other regions and just see what is happening. Looking at the Scotland thread, there are reports of snow even in locations which are not all that high up.

Status 2 alert is Temporary accumulation 1-2cm

Status 3 alert is accumulation 3-5cm

Status 4 alert is accumulation 5-10cm

Status 5 alert is accumulation 10cm+(last issued 2010 I believe)

Hope to use these alerts more regular Dec/Jan :D

Indeed. I'll be extremely happy to just see some falling, not bothered about anything settling until next month. Give it another 4 hours  and I think we should start getting some falling snow reports coming in from the east of  the region, moving westward as the night goes on. As I say, Boxing Day 2014 seems the last comparable event.

The symbol on my weather station has changed to thunder... thunder snow??

No conducive parameters and not the right set up, but it would be nice.

I have to dream though :-)

Even if nothing does happen I still like seeing how it all on folds.

Indeed, sometimes it's fascinating to see the differences in short distances sometimes. A few years back I was standing on the to of Poll Hill (second highest point in Merseyside), at 360 feet, looking down over the Cheshire Plain, where it was comletely white. Yet on the hill, only rain.

 Indeed.

I think I remember you mentioning that, some strange inversion. :-)

Really think this will be a 300m + event, certainly as far as lying snow is concerned, not ruling out places below seeing falling snow come morning though,..

*Considers an all nighter !! :D

You've got the US election as a good by-excuse for the morning at work, so why not.

Well im up at 0300 for work so with a bit of luck and maybe some evap cooling etc i may get day off if i cant cycle in. The trucks wont be able to get in either going by our country's history with small accumulations!!

So it's snowing up there quite early there isn't it? Wasn't it meant to be an early hour event up there? Turned to snow at 8:30pm which is early no?
