Why're you down as 'Greater Liverpool'? We're still Halton/Cheshire?

Halton is part of the Liverpool City Region - aka Greater Liverpool

Oh! Lol. I always check them thinking they were.

Isn't a hi-res model- they'll use an hourly model, tweet Ian F on twitter and give him an ask :)

I'd be right in saying that the only useful PPN charts will be the ones closer to the event?

Why is the Meto keeping on shifting the warning zone? It doesn't go with the latest GFS!

The latest GFS shows the weather system shifted north!!

Well that meto animation shows snow showers moving inland through the afternoon so hopefully there will be a wnw element, as ever we will know on the day but i would say a few cm across quite a large part of the region.I would expect the cumbria crew will get in on the act tomorrow night.

I'm in Southport right now. Just had  a odd shower here too. I think I just  felt something solid in that shower too. Could be sleet mixed in already.

Latest App update shows the period of Shower activity greatly reduced in time showers are predicted to fall and the intensity of those showers.

This ties up with the METO warning and why my area east of Manchester is not in the warning. Might scrape a dusting and will most probably see snow falling either way.

On a more positive not DP's are starting to fall

My lunchtime analysis (as objective as possible) ...

I now have a huge headache about tomorrow.. A clean, convective Arctic NW'ly has been replaced by a bit of a muddle (because of the frontal wave to the south).

12z Thursday

Rtavn301.gif

We're still under a WNW'ly but the flow has weakened and less cold air is now involved in the system.

GFS thinks there will still be notable amount of precipitation Rhgfs303.gif

  as does Euro 4 17011212_1106.gif

....but look how far north the frontal wave is now forecast to travel . The result of course is milder air.

Midday Dewpoints GFS: Rhgfs308.gif

Now above freezing across much of the south of the region..  17011212_1106.gif

 Euro4 not so bad..

The Wet bulb zero level has also crept up to 300 metres, yesterday it was forecast to be 100 metres, so that is another indicator that we've gone more marginal. 17011212_1106.gif

So the morning/lunchtime period looks like it'll be wet rather than white across Liverpool, Manchester, Chester, with snow likely across the Peak District/Pennines.

By 15z the frontal wave has developed into a full blown low across SE England Rhgfs331.gif

, at which point the proper Arctic air comes in from the NW 17011215_1106.gif

, with still plenty of precipitation according to GFS at least Rhgfs333.gif

This is the point I'd expect showers to turn to snow pretty much anywhere, although it may take a little longer towards the coast. The evening rush hour could then be fun with heavy snow showers rattling in, tending to affect more western parts of the region overnight, with it getting quieter further east.

So not a right off by any means, but far less clear cut than it looked to be yesterday. Tomorrow afternoon/evening still looks like it could be fun for many.
