Not as good as this yet from 2005,pretty similar sort of day except it was a colder night beforehand at -2.6c and just more snow to make a covering with drifting until 2pm,max temp made 1.4c.

Currently 1.1c same wind direction and strength.

Dew points are above 0c, hence lack of settling snow and some snow turning to rain. Blame the North Sea.

Actually I think it's the Irish Sea- winds are coming off there and why only the Cheshire Gap region seems to be getting the rain. Every winter since 2013 it's brought down milder temps/dews/uppers, it used to give snow. So why have the winds turned N/NW instead of NE, the isobars support a NEly.

Woke to a covering in Dudley this morning. It very lightly snowed most of the night actually. Sitting in Cannock currently and they've had a bit more snow than we got in Dudley. Still snowing lightly as we speak.

Yep DWW,,

That graph shows why it is turning to rain to the north west of the region.

I  thought we were turning to rain (defo sleet earlier on at 09:00), but it is certainly very light snow flakes here now.

Although the temp has increased to +1.0C, my dew point is still showing as -0.9C.

I am not sure it is absolutely correct (still), but it would explain why it has turned back to snow here, as  clearly we have had the drier easterly still affecting us...

The latest charts show a small low over northern France. Is it going to change  things and support the high a bit longer?

MIA

Agreed, shows how marginal/headache forecasting can be, shame really the precipitation wasn't a lot more heavier, it would drag down the upper air....Snow all the way then.

The conditions we have was excepted, lets hope tomorrow morning bring's hope...Very marginal though, but as we do, keep the faith and you never know. :)

EDIT....1.4c... DP at 1.0+c...SLEETY/SNIZZLE :nonono:

Horrible snizzle now. Had a slight covering but a load of rubbish in reality. Will all be gone in no time. What has happened to winters in this country?

best effort we can expect really in the m/e, 4 hours of snow, -9 uppers, E wind and produces just wet slushy covering, expecting full thaw soon

Horrible and damp with specks of drizzle. The few flakes we had in the night seem to have turned to rain about 0800, not that anything was sticking to begin with. It has been snowing and sticking at lower elevations elsewhere, it must be the post-2013 Cheshire Gap warming effect. We seem to need direct Siberian air for snow in this climate rut we have got into since 2013

-7 should still be cold enough for snow, it's happened at -3 or 4 in the past. The question is what do we need now, -12? -15? And what has changed it since 2013, particularly for the NW Midlands?

It shows the complexity of snowfall and its not just a simple case of if x and y are right then this happens.

For instance, snow was seen falling when 850hpas were above 0C on that last Thursday in January this year when we had that perishingly cold southerly wind.

In the NE USA, a slight temperature variation in a layer of the atmosphere could make the difference between a foot of snow and an inch of American sleet.

Was nice while it lasted. Reckon any showers tonight and tomorrow may still be wintry. Not sure there will be any accumulation though.

Cheshire Gap streamer a few weeks back brought 3 inches of snow here.

Well that was fun! The ground is completely covered in, rain! We had some snow this morning which never even looked like sticking then it turned to rain. I would not mind but it just seems to be a recurring issue now, the majority of the midlands have seen at least one day of lying snow, we had about an hour of it last month, it had gone my 10AM!

Thickness values are too thin aswell.

I expected the wind to come from the north as this so called shortwave/LP moved west, then winds switched to the east as like late feb 2006 but that was a superb cold snap for these days.

bracka.gif

Snow mostly thawed now, except on dry surfaces where its still white over, very light snow now at 1.6c

Snowing more now as I speak.
