It's been an absolute incredible day in this part of the Alps @gareth moo. A real treat for a weather loving, mountain loving addict like me!! It's now 24 hours since my last post and this evening (Mo

Great reading all these plans and photos, thank you all. I 'hope' to do my usual in mid Jan after the Lauberhorn for maybe 6-7 days gentle skiing. Not bad at 78 if I manage it!

It's nice to see the webcams starting to show snow around the favoured spots now. Edelweisspitze has had a covering for a few days which seems to keep getting topped up, and there is a light covering at Longyearbyen. Les Arcs has completely lost the snow of a few weeks ago that hung on for a while, and Stelvio pass is snow-free today, but it was nice to see both of these snowy at the end of September. Yes, it's time to get excited again for virtual snow!

Nice to see fronts from the NW starting to fall as snow in the Alps... even if most of it doesn't last too long at this time of the year!

GFS animation of the above snowfall using the excellent GIF facility on Meteociel starting this Saturday 21st Oct shows most of it melting by the following Saturday 28th:

Nice to see GFS suggesting the first notable snowfall accumulation in the Alps for the upcoming season. :)

Animation from 12z run Sat 14th Oct:

Ever since you posted @Blessed Weatherthat this weekend could see some new falls of snow, I must admit I have been waiting for it all to show up on the webcams, and this morning they delivered at Lauberhorn, Edelweisspitze, Les Arcs 2000 and Stelvio, with a reasonable covering to enjoy. As you say in your later post, by next weekend the likelihood is it will all be melted, but virtual snow happiness reigns for now at least:)

Nice surprise snowfall at elevation in the Western Alps this morning. This picture from Flaine resort in France. Also a general light covering in Katschberg overnight, was not expecting that. Looks like some colder conditions taking hold to the North and East of us. Will be looking forward to the next 10 day snow portal forecast issued later today for the resort piste team operators.

Heavy snowfall this morning in the village. This picture just taken outside the Cristallo Hotel in resort centre. Piste workers will have something to work on today but freeze / thaw condition will not help , however, forecast freezing level to remain below 2000m for the rest of the week is an encouraging prospect for runs above 1500 and that would include all of Katschberg/ Obertauren pistes.

Decent snowfall into Northern Italy above 1000m/1100m and central Italy above about 1200m this morning so an early start to winter over there. Might be a good omen for us here too, never know.

More snow in Italy today. Reports of up to 1/2m of snow above 1,200m today in central Italy on the Apennines, thats a lot for the Tuscan mountains in early November.
