There is a high moving in according to longer-term outlooks, it looks set to move over the South before turning east into the continent and pulling up mild air from the Med. Yikes!

It looks to be pretty cold from the 1st January, i am liking the models, even though i would have liked it to be a week earlier

WSI 3 monthly outlook from Jan to March

Quote

European Seasonal Outlook: Cold Continues to be Focused in Eastern Europe and Western Russia Heading into 2017

Stratospheric Evolution May be Key for Western Europe

Andover, MA, 19 December 2016 — For the aggregate January-March period, The Weather Company, an IBM Business, is forecasting above-normal temperatures across most of Europe, with the exception of Iberia. The relative warmth will be most anomalous across Scandinavia.

“As in October and November, the focus of the December cold has continued to be in eastern Europe and western Russia, while western Europe has been fairly mild this month.” said Dr. Todd Crawford, Chief Meteorologist, The Weather Company, “We expect the persistent Scandinavian ridging to regress a bit into the Northeast Atlantic, which may allow the cold weather to slide further west across parts of southern Europe, at least early in January. We continue to watch the stratosphere for signs of a polar vortex breakdown that may allow more extensive North Atlantic blocking that would increase the chances for cold in western Europe in time for the end of winter.”

For the January to March 2017 time period, The Weather Company is forecasting the following conditions:

January:

Nordic Region - Warmer than normal

UK - Slightly warmer than normal

Northern Mainland - Warmer than normal

Southern Mainland - Warmer than normal west, colder than normal east

February:

Nordic Region – Colder than normal

UK – Colder than normal

Northern Mainland - Colder than normal

Southern Mainland - Warmer than normal east, colder than normal west

March:

Nordic Region – Warmer than normal

UK – Slightly warmer than normal

Northern Mainland - Warmer than normal

Southern Mainland - Warmer than normal east, colder than normal west

Not quite a record breaking day

Today's high is 15.1c in Dyce

The last time it was this warm was in 2011 when Dyce again recorded 15.1c

The Christmas day record is 15.6C set in 1920

Which city should I put my money (it's not really my money but free credit from I betting site)  on for a white christmas, Glasgow?

Manchester 7/2

Glasgow 7/2

Cork 7/2

London 7/2

Birmingham 4/1

Dublin 4/1

Cardiff 5/1

Loch Glascarnoch was confirmed as having a white Christmas but it doesn't look like any cities had snow

2017 looking like the start of a decent cold spell (with snow potential)

Real trend to colder air from 01/01/2017 onwards... this the 850 uppers for london... shows nicely the increase in cold potential.

Should help do some damage to the CET!  Nice to see after the unseasonal warmth of the last few days.

Turning colder into January

Maybe some rain at times and a little bit snow particularly over high ground in the east
