Is that a small shower east of Plymouth or just a blip on the radar?

There's quite a big shower heading up the A38 towards Exeter...

Bloody hell, the lightning and thunder here are very impressive. Loudest for a long time. Properly pouring rain now.

Hehe - you mean since the last time we had thunder?

Thought so, thats behind the cold front too isn't it, so more western parts could be in for a chance?

Yes Plymouth area starting to develop some showers now! Thunderstorms further E seem to be tied in with increased CAPE in that area...

Showers are firing behind the cold front but I don't think we'll see anything thundery overnight.

As mentioned already, tomorrow will be our chance. I could use a quiet nights sleep to be honest!

Had lighting near here, around the Cambridge area, very unexpected.

Okay despite there being nothing but pulse storms about I managed to get a good spot for 10 mins and watched some pretty nice forks drop in the distance behind a sheep. Now it's all stopped so I'm just going to have to assume there is some sort of clever cloud science happening in our part of the world and I'm going to have to move house if I'm ever to see a 'proper' summer storm.

i'm concerned that tomorrow isn't going to happen now, and that Saturday is a write-off too. Despite this I'm going to head for Oxford after work and see if anything happens there.

I AM NOT GETTING MY HOPES UP - DONT SHOUT AT ME FOR GETTING MY HOPES UP!

I have based my plan on forecasts I've seen with the word 'severe' in it. So if we have nothing at all or a flash and a gust of wind then clear skies until next year I'll assume that the magic fairy non-lightning dust has got to into the sky again (or another new scientific reason why I will never again see lightning) ;)

Still, good sheep lighting earlier - I'll try and post some stills...

yeah I agree, probably just rain for anything developing around the Plymouth area. Will be very very surprised if any lightning appears though, never know with these crazy set ups.

EDIT - looks to be dying off again for the time being.

Seems a lot cooler and fresher here now.We had a few big drops of rain around 7.45 but nothing since. So far everything seems to be the east of here.

The north and east anglia / links are getting their weekly supercell now by the looks of it.

for those in the sultry south - here's some lovely sheep lightning to look at:

Thought I just heard thunder but a quick look at the radar shows nothing, so it must have been something else..

Re-reading today's forecasts I think I see the issue - the overuse of the word 'thunderstorm' to denote a flash of lightning or two. Is it possible this term be reserved for actual thunderstorms and not 'thundery rain'?

sorry I know I'm being a pedant but there is a disconnect between what people say sometimes and what I (and possibly others) read. And I don't want to get ideas in my head about events which aren't going to happen.

anyway I'm quitting for the night. Hopefully some rumbles later on in the night but now I need to think about work tomorrow and stop larking about in the rain...

Some yellow CG lightning and big flashes to my north, but all in all a bit pants so far. I'm hoping Saturday yields something for Essex.

I just heard something and that Cambridge cell is too far away. Strange as nothing is showing on radars.

Elevated intra cloud/inter cloud?? Maybe, Lightning detectors have trouble picking it up? (So I have been told many times)

That could be the answer to your question....

You're welcome! :p

My point in a roundabout way was it is ridiculously humid now.
