As I woke first thing a cool stillness would be in the air and a light mist as I looked out the window. Temperatures had fallen to 5c as dawn approached. Soon the mist disappeared to be followed by glorious sunshine and the temperature soon soared responding to well. High alto-cirrus would pass along from time to time to paint a serene peaceful sky. By afternoon it was 17c. As dusk started to develop a light red would fill the western horizon followed by the brightest stars starting to twinkle in a backdrop of the dark blue. So ended a glorious warm Aprils day as bird songs gradually vanished into the darkness.

Nov '96, which was the start to a great winter

very snowy spell, 19th was amazing, Stafford must have been in 'sweet spot' for a low lying area anyway

Dec 2010. Quite simply a month that will never be beaten. We didn't get much snow in Cannock in relation to other places, but the depth of the cold was remarkable. Not getting above -6c on Christmas and Boxing Day with a few inches of snow on the ground. I don't think any of us will see cold like it again in this country with a warming climate.

Au contraire, I think we'll see a Dec 2010 again in the very near future. Difference being it'll be over a longer period. I'll have a bet with you (tenner in it) we'll see a winter comparable to 62/63 before 2030.

I was going to make a satirical quip about the value of the pound but serious discussions are now forbidden :D

But I'll happily take that bet. I'll either get a pornographic winter or I'll make a tenner, win-win. Fingers crossed Netweather still exists in 15 years!

Deal :)

I do want my tenner though if we do get a comparable winter to 62/63. I'll honour my word if we don't. I'll let you set the definition of comparable :p I'm nice like that :p

Reminiscing about winter in the depths of summer is something I strangely often do.. vice versa summer in winter.. anyhow, yes December 2010 was very special, it felt similiar to how I felt in August 1995 which brought barely a drop of rain and consistent heat, after a while you acclimatise, and waking up to another ice day began to feel normal, indeed a min of -5 degrees was taken with a pinch of salt, in some winters past, everyone will have remarked on how cold -5 degrees felt, yet rarely did people complain about the depth of cold in Dec 2010 - quite odd. I think the reason being at least here, because most days were bright with sunshine and little in the way of rain or snow, making for very pleasant conditions provided you were wrapped up. Virtually any wind to speak of neither, it made a change from the gales and incessant rain we normally have to endure.

There was a particular day I remember from that month - think it was the 20th, a Tuesday, an ice day with a min below -10 degrees and a full moon, made it feel very arctic, the atmosphere had a polar feel to it, rivers and lakes had frozen solid by then adding to the arctic feel. We also had a mini-earth tremor that evening. The run up to christmas 2010 overall was excellent - superb, 9 ice days on the trot, and snow on the ground. Shame the cold broke around the 28th, leaving a slushy mucky mess for New Year.

August 1995 - a personal favourite though, complete opposite to Dec 2010, our driest sunniest an quite possibly warmest month on record. The Lake District was baking bone dry, lakes and reservoirs exceptionally low, the ground a dusty brown colour, heat haze lingered in the air throughout.

That final few days was a shame, would have been the coldest December in the CET record otherwise.

A favourite month,a difficult question.I love extremes, snow for months and long hot summers.January 1979 really is a benchmark with December 1981 just as amazing but I have real fond memories of February 1986,not as much snow and not as cold minima but unrelenting east winds the entire month made its average colder than any month since 1963.Summer months are a real tossup to choose from 1983,84,89,90,95,96,97,2003 and 2006.August 84 felt really special for me but the summer as a whole of 1995 was simply amazing .

Yes summer 95 best since 76, better than 03 and 06 for the NW at least. We were spared the cold cloudy easterlies of early June. A superb summer.

Difficult to single one out overall.

For thunder: August 2004

For sun and heat: August 1995

For cold: December 2010

For variety: March 1995 and May 1997

For snow: January 2010

For storminess: February 1990

October 1995 is a particular favourite of mine.

Very hard to decide, so I'll pick a fave from each year to my earliest memories -

December 1981, for intense cold and heavy snow.

July 1982 for being very dry.

August 1983 for heat and thunder.

April 1984 for snow showers at first, followed by a very warm and sunny late Easter.

February 1985, for the blizzards then the freeze.

February 1986 for intense cold and severe frosts.

January 1987 for the intense cold and blizzards.

October 1988 for its quiet, sunny and frosty school half term.

July 1989 for heat, and a very violent thunderstorm on 7th.

July 1990 for baking sunshine.

February 1991 blizzards.

May 1992 for heat and thunderstorms

October 1993 for thunderstorms, then much colder, frosty weather.

October 1994 for dense fog clearing to sweltering sunny afternoons.

August 1995 for exceptional hot, dry, sunny weather.

June 1996 for hot spells after the cold May.

August 1997 for heat and thunderstorms.

February 1998, exceptionally warm and dry.

May 1999, thunderstorms.

March 2000, very pleasant, before a dire rest of the year.

September 2001, mostly dry and settled.

October 2002, fine and warm start, stormy later.

February 2003, very dry and sunny with some hard frosts and snow earlier on.

August 2004, very thundery indeed.

March 2005, cold and wintry, then much warmer.

July 2006, very hot and clear.

April 2007, very warm, very sunny, very dry.

October 2008, snowfall on 28th.

February 2009, severe first half, very spring-like second half

December 2010 for snowfall and exceptional cold.

April 2011, hottest on record, very sunny and bone dry.

March 2012, warm and sunny before a dreadful rest of the year.

August 2013, warm and unusually calm.

July 2014, hot and sunny.

October 2015, fine and hazy for long periods.

And so far, for 2016, July, which here has been very dry indeed.

I lived in Brum until 2009, then been living in Portland, Dorset since :)

I'd agree in the main with much of the above for each of the years mentioned, but exchange some for the following -

November 1993 - cold with lots of frost and snow later on.

February 1994 - cold and snowy

Feb 96 - cold and very snowy

July 1999 - warm with lots of sunshine and some thundery outbreaks

Nov 2005 - contrasting two halves, very mild and wet first half, very cold frosty second half

Dec 2009 - very cold and very snowy second half

July 2013 - very warm dry and sunny

so far 2016, May has been the best month, lots of dry warm sunny weather here. July has been fairly mediocre.

Been loads really I'm an old fart so I can remember 62/63 when I lived with my parents and it was indeed snowy. However from what I have read other parts of the NW didn't get much snow at all. I lived in the Hollinwood area of Oldham at that time and remember my dad digging snow away from the door so we could actually get out. He also had lots of time of work as the cement kept freezing, he was a brickie.

Other highlights include some very snowy Winters in the late 70's when we had to dig out the lane here due to big snow drifts. There were a few snowy Winters in the 80's. Then things turned milder for a few years starting in 1988 before we got that Feb 1991 freeze.

There were some decent snows in the mid 90's too. Late Dec 2000 was quite good as well given it was part of the milder phase of Winters. Until that broke in late 2008.

Worst snow since I have lived in this house was in the late 70's. Some proper blizzards and deep drifts. Some of the snow depths in the 80's came close but not quite as bad as the late 70's.

Indeed both January & December 2010 were very cold with decent falls of snow but snow wise they didn't come close to what we got years ago.

Jan, Feb 63 & Dec 2010 were the coldest months I have experienced but again in terms of actual snow depth Dec 2010 wasn't as bad as years gone by. Wonder if we will see snow again like 1947 below - it was past the rooftops in places

June 2005 - second half of month in particular was very warm and very thundery! MCS and probably the last proper one experienced on the night of the 28th.

July 2006 - very hot and sunny with low humidity. Felt as if I was in the Mediterranean. Good thunderstorms followed on after.

December 2009 and 2010 - both very cold and snowy. Prolonged cold spells.

February 2009 - very snowy start. One of the better February's of my lifetime.

March 2012 - one of the warmest on record and warmer than any March I've ever experienced. Shame about the rest of the year!

March 2013 - the stark opposite to the year before. Coldest and snowiest March I've ever seen.

July 2013 - very warm and at times hot. First proper night thunderstorm seen since 2006! So felt quite special and refreshing to see.

Since then, the months have been quite diverse such as July 2015 which broke the July 2006 temperature of 36.5c, with 36.7c on the 1st and then a drastic flip over to one of the coolest summer days ever towards the end of that quite remarkable month! Thunder activity was also very impressive.

Heres to hopefully more historic winter months to list.

I think my #1 is November 2010, as it ranked high for variety as well as having that phenomenal cold spell in the last week with widespread thundersnow in the north-east.  In Norwich, where I was, snow showers were frequent from the 25th to 29th inclusive.  For those reasons I'd put it marginally ahead of the following December, although there's not much in it between them.

I also gave serious consideration to March 1995 and July 2006.

March 1995 was brill, just like a March should be! Everything from gales, very warm sunshine, thunderstorms, hail, hard frosts, and snowfalls :)

December 2010 was great. At the time I was 14, and so having four days off school in the run up to Christmas was sweet.10 inches of lying snow is the most I've ever seen IMBY, and a temperature of -14C was also a record for me. I think it was probably this month that got me interested in meteorology; annoying really because if I'd already had an interest then I probably would have appreciated it so much more at the time.

Four CET daily records were broken during the cold spell (28/11/2010, -4.0C; 19-21/12/2010, -6.8C, -7.0C, -5.9C respectively), and the coldest ever November CET maximum was recorded (28/11/2010, -1.0C).

On top of that, the coldest ever month long period (defined as 31 days) to have started as early as November was the one which started on 27/11/2010, recording a CET of -1.5(4)C. This smashed the previous record: the next coldest such period was that which started on 26/11/1878, at -0.9C.

It really was an extreme month for cold, and I hope I live to see at least one more month like it.

You would have loved it in 1981 also, the English record was set just up the road in Shawbury at -26 deg,not sure what snow they got there but we had far more here in 1981 than 2010 which created huge drifts in the wind. Also February 1986 which is still the coldest month since 1963 .

July 2006 ranks highly - many happy memories of that summer, I was 18, nearly 19, and didn't have many responsibilities at the time. Doesn't seem that long ago, but it's 10 years.. time flies by.

August 1995 was great too, but I was 8 so the memories are not as clear. Do remember it raining the day after my birthday though, and my birthday itself being hot.

December 2010 was by far the best winter month of my lifetime.. never experienced anything like it. Absolutely fantastic. Would love a repeat. River Aire in Leeds froze over from bank to bank, probably the first time since the 1960s. Was also a sunny and dry December - walking along a sparkling snow field with the sun hanging low in the sky reminded me of Scandinavia.

April 2011 and March 2012 - very sunny and warm. April 2011 had virtually no rain, and 0 rain days >1mm.
