Proper cold bonfire night was just a bonus, good old style shivering, wrapped up warm affair, lovely!

Totally agree, I'm loving it so far,  lets just hope it continues,  but as we head towards Christmas I'm hoping we get to see some snow too.

Looking at Met Office records, October was the driest month of the year for most regions of the UK.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/summaries/2016/october/regional-values

How unusual is it for October to be the driest month in the UK and when was the last time it happened?

Yes preety unusual, more so in terms of how widespread the level of dryness was. October on average is one of the wettest months of the year for many, especially NW regions. Indeed it has been the wettest month of the year on quite a few occasions.

I think October 1974 was the driest month of 1974 in the NW at least thanks to a predominant northerly flow.

We are only at 130 meters and definitely snow in with the rain just now.

Yes, makes a nice change and would definitely have this cold or colder for a few more months :)

The metoffice actual and anomoly maps look wrong for this area in October. We had 150% of average rainfall (89mm) but the Metoffice charts have us below 50mm.

First weather warning of the season for snow issued by the Met Office

Quote

Warning

Rain will turn to snow in places later on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. This could bring accumulations of 4 to 8 cm across some hilly areas of northern England and Scotland, largely above 200-300 m, with as much as 15 cm possible above 300-400 m.

Overnight Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, as snow peters out over Scotland, there is the potential for snow to settle to low levels over parts of Yorkshire and down into the northeast Midlands, though with a good deal of uncertainty about this. Please be aware of the risk of difficult driving conditions in some areas.

Chief Forecaster's assessment

A band of rain spreading slowly in will turn to snow as it encounters cold air. Whilst this will be mainly on high ground, and heavier bursts could easily bring snow down to low levels. Overnight into Wednesday morning, there are concerns that heavier bursts could bring snow more widely down to low levels over parts of eastern England, though at this stage there is low confidence.

Edit: For recent years it's kind of unusual to have one for snow before we've had one for wind & rain. Have we had any for that in Oct/Nov?

Last November we had 3 named storms; 10th, 16th and 28th no signs yet of when the 1st named storm will arrive this season

And so the trend continues, mother nature is certainly teasing us this year! Can't remember a spell of prolonged broad agreement of the models at this time of year for a very long time. Second half of this month could prove VERY interesting, suspect sales of straight jackets my increase substantially to cope with the twists and turns coming up,just don't forget its the pattern you are looking for,not individual runs.

Strongly suspect in some areas overnight there will be a good deal of curtain twitching and lamppost watching, its amazing how many 40yr old plus kids there are in this country!! I include myself in that statement:) Pennies could be one of the good spots for snow so fingers crossed.
