What disappointing day,not nice at all, heavy cloud, humidity going up along with the temp, can't see any enjoyment in that at all. So so thankful its only a quick burst this week, sick to the back teeth now of this summer.

Don't forget also that in 1995 we had a very hot August followed by a cold December. Being as August is only the month before September and being as it's 4 months before December, there is the same time difference between now and January as there was then between a very hot month and a cold one. I'm not saying this means that January will be cold mind, I'm just highlighting how just because temperatures are above average now doesn't mean it's a given it will be then. In fact there's plenty of examples of above average and below average periods in close proximity. Iapennell mentioned the Winter of 1985/86. I don't remember it personally mind as it was my first Winter post womb, but I do know from the records that after the very cold November of 1985, December flipped to quite mild. This of course was followed by the sub zero CET month of February 1986. Coming back to more recent times we have the most recent sub zero CET month of December 2010 (the first since Feb 86 in fact) which was soon followed by the mild February of 2011. This just shows that no matter how extreme temperatures are in one direction doesn't negate the possibility of them flipping in the opposite direction in a matter of weeks even.

Getting back to aspects of this season rather than thinking what the next may have in store, I noticed a few mushrooms on my lawn today.

Stop press....

September Glosea update is out and it's a stonker- cold late autumn and winter with quite extensive N blocking and -NAO

This now backs up what we've heard RE EC Seasonal

The only time I take any notice of Winter forecasts is November 30th.

The Northern blocking theme seems to be gaining momentum now. Fingers x'd

Looking good out there this morning. I wake up so much more in the morning when I know it's going to be a nice day. Looks like some corking storms down south too.

Feels absurd here so far today. Like a sauna even in the early morning, can't remember it feeling that way from the off in mid-September before (I.e since around 2000).

Does anyone happen to know what the date records are for today, tomorrow and Thursday?

Thanks :)

No. I don't remember any significant signal for cold, it was pretty much expected to be a fairly disappointing winter, but not quite on the scale of December

Today: 28.3c
Tomorrow: 28.6c
Thursday: 28.9c

Certainly possible that all three could go.

Thank you very much Nick :good: for some reason I could never locate that link despite having accessed it last year:search:

This could be an exceptional spell of weather by this particular measure.

Already Gravesend is at around 28*C so the date record for today could go by noon!

Meanwhile it's come over all malicious looking here, with distant grumbles of thunder. Signs it will clear nice and sharply from the south in the early afternoon though

Phwoar - the London airports have jumped into the lead with 30*C at noon. There goes the date record already - and then some!

Well, I'm certainly not going to suggest that we won't be getting another dose of 'relative' heat sometime in October...October 1978 had a lovely spell of 25C-days, sometime around mid-month...

And, as they like to say: the rest was history!:yahoo:

Heathrow has already hit 32.2c today - above the expected levels and it's still early doors! How high will it climb? Could we sneak a 33c+ somewhere?

For now, yes. Seem to be moving up the W half of the UK, the E mainly sunny and hot.

The humidity is shocking again today. It seems to be a running theme this year, another 20C+ dewpoint (that's four times this summer) when its generally once or twice a decade.

Currently 26.9C with a dewpoint of 20.3C.

The September record max is 27.0C here too (since 1980), so that looks like it might go aswell.
