Some nice structure near Aberystwyth this afternoon. The motion was unusual, looked like it was heading out to sea but then did an abrupt right turn directly overhead.

Sounds interesting did it have any interesting features, like wall clouds, funnels and is that pic a shelf cloud?

Storms that change direction often have some circulation.

Don't understand why the narrow Severn Estuary is having such an effect on the storms. Hasn't stopped them in recent years - maybe the air's just not unstable enough. Pouring with rain here with infrequent quiet thunder in the distance.

That's exactly what it's like, there's almost like no oomph about the storm. Barely no structure to it either.

Such a shame, barely raining here now, and keep getting a glimpse of the sun.

Plenty go on further East though, Bath must be getting a soaking

On a more serious note, I recall a night in August 1975 when the lightning from very distant storms was being reflected off cirrus clouds; and, couple of years back, I could see lightning from a monster storm in Milton Keynes!

Good luck for the weekend!:bomb:

It's amazing how far away you can see lightning in the right conditions. I've seen lightning from a storm in Sussex from East Dorset before. Forks too! (from the anvil).

I've also heard thunder from many miles further away than popular thinking says possible. Like 100 miles! It was late evening last year - incredibly still under plume conditions. Very, very deep rumbles.

That's truly amazing, what looked like a direct hit turned into a damp squib.

It's actually clearing up here now, just over 3mm of rain & the odd rumble of thunder:nonono:

Very bizarre - the storm seems to have just... collapsed. Rain stopped and clouds clearing again.

Thinking the storm was awful, until I just heard some loud shotgun thunder... Make up your mind!

Maybe the storm spread out too quickly and just killed itself. Still looks like a substantial core on the southeastern side of it but the rest of it is just a mess.

Looks like it's trying to reorganise itself to the South - but not getting my hopes up.

Why does everything want to miss me? I used my own money to drive to Exmoor only to be greeted by nothing!

The way the cookie crumbles sometimes. Think that's bad? I drove to Kent to intercept cells crossing from Calais area, only to have diminished as soon as I arrived 2 and a half hours later. A bust or two will never kill off my hobby though, it's just the way it goes sometimes.

I concur with you. I've seen lightning as far as the IOW and Dorset from north Cambridgeshire! Best part of 200 miles away.

Most thundery looking sky I have seen in ages

DSC_0368.JPG

Just driven through that whilst going from Windsor to Staines. Very large raindrops, torrential at times, but no thunder heard.

seemed to appear from nowhere!
