Had a fair few distant rumbles here earlier but it's all gone quiet now.I seem to be in that hole just north of Derby.I hope to see something now that I have finished work. These storms are moving extremely slowly and look set to last well into the evening so should be time yet.

I don't know if it's due to locations people here are in, but it seems there's more T&L around than the radars are showing?

It's taken well over an hour for the storm development zone to slip south from Cannock to just north of Walsall and Wolverhampton...

..meanwhile, storms and showers progress northwards from the Bristol area.

It looks really good for here for the next hour or two.

Heavy rain here now with occasional rumbles or thunder directly overhead. Feeling a tad fresher at least! Skies look slate grey from underneath and it's actually quite bright.

Incredible storm in Spalding right now! It just has not moved at all. Hearing the emergency services rushing about everywhere now.

That is because the detectors only pick up CG strikes

Not true, they pick up cloud-to-cloud strikes as well.

They can pick up any strike, but can miss high-based cloud-to-cloud/intra-cloud strikes moreso than cloud-to-ground.

Detectors depending on the triangulation will pick up any electrical activity, sometimes they can pick up a discharge from power lines, factories, anything.
