I'm guessing there's a cold front approaching from the southwest?

Looks a classic set up to me with storms breaking out ahead of the front in the humid air.

In these setups, there's usually a 'dead zone' in between the storms and the front itself..and I'm just..only just...in that dead zone. Showers and storms are forming just a few miles to my north. I can see them!

Please tell me if I have got this afternoon's setup wrong. But it seems to me that's how it works. Storms breaking out..then a zone of not a lot going on..then the front itself?

Keeping a close eye on the live wind vectors....looks like we have a convergence building to the near North......early days yet:)

Nice horse shoe shaped area of Altocumulus Castellanus cloud just went overhead, looked like a developing gust front. LOL.

Odd spot of rain here which sums it all up. Storms to the north west and south east and the normal gap here.

Nice heavy shower here, and maybe a rumble of thunder, though it's hard to be sure with the container lorries rumbling past the office.

It's wherever the instability and forcing is, Gord.  Today looks like it's playing out as expected, with storms having fired near marked convergence zone over N Mid/N England which is where moisture and instability is pooled. Nothing in the storm handbook that says there be a 'dead zone'.

Thank you. It's just an observation I've made a few times in the past when cooler air is on the way. Always seems to be some kind of gap when storms break out ahead of it. Noticed it when I lived in Ohio as well...although the difference there is that the cold front itself tended to be a line of nasty storms as well as the usually severe ones breaking out ahead of it!

Just a thought though...I know the weather conditions doesn't always fit into neat little categories as we would sometimes like them to!

Thanks for taking the time to explain what's happening...doesn't change the fact that they're annoyingly forming just to my north though!

The 'dead zone' is Telford lol! Would be nice to just get some heavy rain, we have missed out all week!

Looks like the West Mids is back to producing storms for the enjoyment of other areas ?

Raining heavily here and the thunder and lightning between here and Nottingham is getting much closer.

A few strikes towards Macclesfield, audible here but contrary to the radar the skies don't look too threatening (yet.)

At the moment...yes.

However, and this would prove me utterly wrong in my previous post...the showers around Bristol are starting to look a little pokey and if anything does form to our southwest...then we have a chance.

I really want my earlier post to be wrong now!

Is there a cold front down there somewhere and where is it?

Only hope here if the cells to south west beef up a lot. Otherwise skirting past us.

Some bright echoes to the north west but looking that way the skies fairly bright. Sun may come out and warm things up a bit shortly which may do the trick.

There we go...strikes now near Bristol.

I am gloriously wrong about any kind of dead zone!
