Nevertheless, this is a very rare event. Cannot remember a single storm from the East/Northeast here apart from one time in summer 2003 I think, late evening time (21:00-22:00). Was very astounded at how active it was too, and even as a youngster thinking how unusual it was to see storms roll in from the east, as opposed to the south or the west. Remember watching it from my east facing window and then move west over towards Leicester and Rutland.

Have not seen the like since, not even close.

Does anyone on here have any memories of it?

The night of 2/3 May 2014 we had storms from the East, one after another. Still the highest rainfall in 24 hour period I have ever recorded here at 42mm. From memory the thunderstorms last from around 9pm to midnight, then we had almost constant heavy rain for 4 or 5 hours.

Running the radar loops, storms seems to be moving NE to SW on the leading edge of the warm/moist plume axis fanning out westwards into the N Sea from The Netherlands/N Belgium - which ties in with the 500mb contour around the mid-level low centred over NE France.

@Nick F, is there any chance our area will be seeing any thundery outbreak any time soon that may be of an elevated nature, or if not, of a surface based nature? :)

Yes I do (she says, resurfacing after hibernation for 6 months!) I seem to remember it was thundery in the south  - it moved northward and then suddenly did a U turn in the N Sea and came back over Norfolk, I have a picture somewhere of me standing in one of our fields gazing up at some potential rotation!

Unlikely IMO. You're looking dry for much of the week.

Interesting to note tonight that due to the unusual nature of this weather event the usually accurate adage of "red sky at night / shepherds delight" is - in fact - incorrect, as the red sky usually signifies clear air to the west (where the sun sets) whereas tonight the west is where the clear air went!

(Edit: I know ive over-simplified it!)

I had red sky in the West and the East this evening..

Same here too, although the skies remarkably clear now (grrr!!). Been trying to glimpse a flash in the distant but still too far away

Raining here now, I'm assuming it's the warm front in front of the instability.

Wow. It's certainly one that I have not forgotten! It wasn't your typical average storm either that's for sure. It was more like cracking pink crawlers at quite a rate!

Glad you remembered it.

Both the GY ones are offline unfortunately! Can't find a live feed for Lowestoft either.

So are the storms likely to intensify on landfall? I know there's no energy from diurnal heating anymore, but is there some land-based mechanism to give them added oomph?

theyve travelled so far - such a waste if it all dies off...

The Dutch beast has turned into a rain mess with odd cloud farts as it nears our shores. Who'd a thought it?

In all fairness though, looks to be dying down now,but the one N of NL's is popping off nicely

as an IMBY pov, just hoping those cells mid N sea gather momentum.

Edit:there is a line of cells trying to reform between the two main clusters again.

Funny how the N Sea can sustain storms over the N Sea but if they move in any direction other than north.......*sound of deflating balloon*
