The mean temp in London this summer so far is 18.4c, which looks unlikely to change in the final week.  That's only 0.5c above the long term average summer mean of 17.9c, so it's been a case of being notably above average further north and west, and only slightly above average here (though still warmer in absolute terms).

Just a quick question.

What do you mean by the long term summer average.
Only people seem to use so many "averages" these days.

The 81-10 average period.  In 2020/21 I will refer to the 91-20 period.

Thanks.

So basically the London summer average is considerably higher than the std CET average.

Yes, London summers are roughly 2c warmer than the CET, and the far NW is about 2c cooler. I don't know what the CET averages are off the top of my head, but London (Heathrow) summer means are as follows.

June: 16.4c

July: 18.7c

August: 18.5c

In the meantime does any one of you naysayers have a better way of visualising England's long-term temperature records?:cc_confused:

Seeing as everywhere round London and to a greater extent has gone well over 30c and topping possible 32/33c.

Would you describe today as just warmer than normal or in the hot/very hot department. ( serious question))
This area has reached well over 25c a lot of times this summer.

There have been a huge amount of summers that havent hit the regular heights that this summer has..
I can understand someone in Leeds having a problem with this summer but not a Londoner.

I would call 32/33C - especially in late August - very hot.:D

Down here I wouldn't consider it hot unless it was over 30c, and very hot around 32/33c+, so today is borderline very hot.

We get almost 30 days above 25c in a typical summer, so it isn't a major threshold for us, whereas we only see 4.4 days above 30c and 0.7 days above 32c in a normal summer.

I am outside of the CET zone so don't tend to take much notice of it, it is quite often a couple of degrees higher than my location for obvious reasons. As for here well if we are comparing against the 81-10 average.

June - 13.1c (-0.4c)

July - 15.8c (+0.0c)

August - 15.7c so far (+0.2c)

Looking at my statistics and then hearing from Nick that the summer may be be in the top 10 warmest I sometimes wonder if I live in a different country. :cc_confused:

Well it's the top 10 warmest for the CET region.

Yes I understand that Nick, I was merely pointing out that the above average theme for the summer so far is not countrywide.

Interesting really.

As you suggest that it could fall in the top 10 CET.

I would say there is a very high % of more unhappy people than happy people, as it would suggest a good summer.

Well according  to NW temp tracker.

May 2c over

June 1.3c over

July 1c over

Aug to now 1.3c over.

Thats the CET and in my mind London SE wards has been much higher.

As mentioned by Nick L this summer CET could be top ten, which puts it in the well above average.

Or am I wrong in this assumption.

Not wrong at all. On temperature alone, and going by the CET, summer 2016 has been above average. Don't think anyone is arguing about that...but there are other factors that determine a good summer. Others have said that the CET isn't the best guage to use, I'm inclined to agree.

Much more pleasant today with a breeze off the North Sea and completely clear skies. We had a brief maximum of 23.4C after midday with the temperature now a comfortable 19.6C.

You would be mistaken. This summer has been perfectly fine in Leeds. Today reached 26C which was higher than forecast - and it's a pleasant temperature. All three summer months will come in slightly warmer than average with below average rainfall (except June which was wet).

However the figures speak for themselves. At Heathrow Airport it's been very average temperature wise. Summer 2016 is decent but not great or a classic. London already gets a solid month of 25C+ temps a year on average so it's notunusual at all.

The thing that's annoying is people banging on like this summer was amazing or something. It's not. Many summers like it in the past.

Can't recall anyone saying it's amazing. Many people like myself have said it's decent, and many agree. It's certainly not the misery fest some are claiming it to be around here.
