Morning all, been preparing for the first operational winter on the Leigh Ellenbrook Guided Busway. Been gritter driving over the last couple of week. Should be getting the outline winter forecast from Wigan Council in the next week, hoping that we have some winter weather to battle through this year!!

Still waiting for our first ground frost of the season, we normally have had one by now. Good chance tomorrow evening might deliver.. an air frost would be nice but may have to wait a bit longer.

It was a stunning day for photographers, very clear air, and with the lower sun casting long shadows on the eastern wall of the southern/central lakeland fells, superb stuff. The sun still has a bit of heat in it, and with the light winds it felt much more pleasant than yesterday. The outlook looks bright rather than sunny but we could see stubborn cloud invade from the east making for a rather drab few days and therefore less chance of crisp cold starts.

Just back home after a couple of weeks holiday and looking at the trees, autumn is well and truly here now.

i do love the look of this time of year although after two weeks of temperatures in the 80's and 90's it was a bit fresh sat at the footy today.

Yes it can hit you like a slap in the face that moment a few hrs ago you were in hot/humid air to arriving back home in cold, nippy windy conditions, even more so now we're approaching winter.

You haven't missed much weather wise, it's been relatively dry and temps about average.  The Day+10 fun and games are starting in the model thread, with a screaming northerly showing.  Until then it's another dry, rather benign week ahead for North West.  The Atlantic is still asleep.

Indeed the models are showing a potent Northerly(abeit a dry one)at the moment.

However for me cold frosty nights and wintry Sunshine by day suits me

Have a feeling this thread may become a bit busier next week

The last time the charts where showing this kind of potential this early on was 2010! Infact the last time the charts where looking this good was 2010!

So far the atmosphere in our part of the world appears to be very different to the last few years. I hope we finally get a proper winter, or at least a proper winter month where the whole region gets in on some decent snowfall.

STILL ONLY POTENTIAL THOUGH but so far so good...

Just thought i'd  mention:  the last two nights have been particularly cold here with minimums of 4.1°C and 4.4°C respectively.

Decent day's weather again today and nice to see the models showing some northern blocking and favourable conditions as we enter the period where snow is at least a possibility.

whether it materialises or if it turns out to be nothing more than a tease only time will tell but it's frustrating to see the current pattern in that seasonal no mans land where it offers little other than pleasant conditions.

still it's better than mild, cloudy and wet.

Another lovely dry sunny calm day, lost track of how many such days we've had this October - very unusual. Normally by this stage in October we should be looking at wet conditions. Whilst it will become a little unsettled Wed-Fri, rainfall amounts will be quite small, and winds fairly light, so fingers crossed the leaves stick to the trees for a bit longer, especially if the models verify as currently being shown, some proper frosts early Nov which will do wonders for the colours, a late autumnal display could be on the cards this year.

Well I will certainly be on here with you, especially since our little coastal strip was the only place not to have snow in the entire region last year  and we were incredibly unlucky.  The thought of it still winds me up! Got a feeling things  Will be very different  this year.

Horrible morning here, light persistent Drizzle and feels quite mild

At 12c,The METO update is very nice though, with night frosts

Becoming a feature, and also the snow word is mentioned

(only for hills up north)at this stage though )

Strange happenings on tonight's regional forecast with Diane Oxberry in her usual excitable mood talking about drizzle and how mild it would be overnight just as snow symbols were appearing over the hills.

obviously a technical issue but poor Di would have needed counselling if she had seen it.

I wouldn't have thought that anyone got much in the way of snow last year.

we had a bit but even at my altitude it was a poor attempt at winter unless of course rain and floods is considered as classic winter conditions.

hopefully this time around will be better though and we wil all get our share of snow.

As soon as the wind switched and started coming off the Irish sea again a few days ago it's been horrible drizzly and cloudy here.

It should start to feel colder from Tuesday
