It has been like living in eeyore's bum today, awful! It has been the dullest day I have recorded since owning a solar radiation sensor (March 23rd)

Temp: 12.9°C - Hum: 82% - Dew: 9.9°C - Bar: 1021.98hPa - Wind: ENE @ 1mph.

Cool and dull almost all day with the exception of a few minutes of sunshine late afternoon before the gloom returned. Max temperature 13.7°C.

Quite a mild night compared to most of the week, didn't go below 11C. 100% light cloud cover today.

I'm assuming a trough has moved South overnight bringing the light rain/showers that have not only dampened the ground but introduced pleasingly clearer air, totally blue sky as sunrise beckons and temperature dropping at 8.6c .

I spent five minutes this morning trying to decide whether the layer cloud was high Sc or low Ac, not easy to tell without some guidance. Loking at the camborne 00z ascent I'll settle for high Sc around 6,000 feet. Much warmer air above. Anyway temp 11C and no wind.

Hey All,

Hope you've all had a good summer.

It's that time of year again when I retreat from the garden and start lurking on here . Love this thread! It keeps me going all autumn and winter!

Beautiful day here today got up to 15.4oC although the cloud did bubble up a bit this afternoon but it was quite toasty in the sunshine.

Anyway here's hoping that everyone's winter dreams come true this year.

I thought they were fallstreak holes. Here they are as seen to the South from Trowbridge and a little later from Westbury.

What causes them to form? Pretty spectacular sight.

A quick wiki suggests:

A fallstreak hole (also known as a hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, skypunch, cloud canal or cloud hole) is a large gap, usually circular or elliptical, that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water, in a supercooled state, has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation. When ice crystals do form, a domino effect is set off due to the Bergeron process, causing the water droplets around the crystals to evaporate: this leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud.[1]

It is believed that the introduction of large numbers of tiny ice crystals into the cloud layer sets off this domino effect of evaporation which creates the hole

Yep - good view of them here too. I've never seen one with my own eyes before, but i knew exactly what it was when I saw it, then spent 10 minutes searching for my phone, before getting some pictures. I probably missed the best of it.

Double punch!

A low of 3.3°C this morning, lowest of season so far.

Temp: 14.3°C - Hum: 63% - Dew: 7.2°C - Bar: 1026.18hPa - Wind: N ~ NNE @ 5mph.

It's possible that the South coast may get grazed by some heavy showers as winds converge in the channel on Wednesday/Thursday.

I noticed those when along along the beach earlier. Thought they looked a bit different.

Quite cool today although warm in the sun when sheltered from the breeze. High temperature today was 14.3°C.

As I posted earlier I noticed the clouds this afternoon and was wondering what it was. Never seen that before.

They were obviously pretty widespread today and I saw them for the first time too.  Taken shortly after 11.00 this morning.
