Quiet in here this morning, top gusts on the mainland so far I've seen in last few hours have been 75 mph at Mumbles and Aberdaron in Wales, 66 mph at Plymouth. Culdrose saw a gust of 79mph overnight. Looks like peak gusts of 60-70 mph reaching further east across southern counties late morning into early afternoon. Fairly calm here atm compared to the squalls that came through early last night.

Based down at camber sands since yesterday afternoon, The anometer was picking up gusts around 50 and 55mph until about 2100.Between then and 0100 I recorded 63mph as the highest gust.A lull in the wind strength between then and 8am.As I type they are increasing again.

The top tide is just before 11 so am hoping for the steady increase to coincide.

Sods law a vicious squall went through my London neck of the woods last night as I was away! Grr.A constant roar of wind here last night, and the sands have become like a blizzard.

Expecting a peak in gusts between 12:00 and 16:00 across much of the south coast, frequent 70mph gusts, topping 80mph at times.

Take a look at the Woolacombe cam, with the palm trees it could be mistaken for a hurricane...ignoring the England flag :D

And that's why speed restrictions are put in place during high winds!

Quite bizzare how each wind event varies locally. It's not windy at all here! (yet)

Yes I agree! looks like the coasts and hills have got the wind a few hours earlier than it picking up over inland areas.

Has been very gusty here at times but the wind does drop away in between gusts to almost completely calm!!

Although the past half an hour  have noticed an increase in the frequency/strength of the gusts and the calm spells are definitely shorter!; either that or we're just more sheltered from westerlies than southerly winds!

Can't see any of the GFS' 65-70mph gust predictions inland yet across southern England, 40-50mph quite widely and there are a few stations recording 50-60mph. Strongest winds so far have been across S/SW Wales, North Devon and along the exposed south coast, as expected in the amber warning zone.

The peak will be through this afternoon across southern England. Gusts of 60mph possible up to the M4 corridor going on the Euro4 hourly gusts.

The amber warnings should never have included some central southern counties - breezy and thats it. Can tell it's a non event here (southampton) as haven't heard one person in the office talking about it

See my post above. The worst is coming this afternoon. And observations all along the south coast have gusts above 60mph so I don't really see what more you can expect?

Perhaps, and this is a crazy thought, it's best to see how this event plays out before saying whether the Met Office got it right?

Yeah up to 60mph seems nearer the mark away from exposed coasts, Isle of Portland 79mph and the Isle Of Wight 69mph just recently. GFS does tend to over do inland wind speeds a tad, best sticking to hi res models when in range.

GFS 6z has gusts of 66ph for me at 15:00PM quite a storm for London's standards.
