1987 had close to 100mph winds, thousands of trees down, come on, highest gust I've seen mentioned was 81mph for Scilly, thats just a breeze for down there. :D

So how strong have the winds been in the West? Them squall lines last night were worse if you ask me.

@Ben Lewis as I said in my post to you earlier why is it wrong for people to report what they are seeing or what they saw in the models???? as has been proved no one made true comparisons to 87!!!!

I took my dog to Shooters Hill which you might already know is one of the higher points on the London/ Kent border. It felt a bit dangerous ion the woods as I could see freshly fallen, large, branches which would have done some damage to my head! Nobody else around so I got out of the woods into open ground and at times it was difficult to stand still in the gusts. Even so, I don't think I've felt or seen anything particularly bad as yet but its the sustained wind and gusts over a period of time that seems to cause damage to already weakened trees.

@ihatecoldweather you do realise one of the quotes you've used actually contradicts the claim that people were saying it'd be as bad as '87? :D

"I doubt if it will be like 87..."

Pretty damn blowy here.

I doubt if it will be like 87...  it could possibly become close

So that was a comparison the 1987.

They may not have claimed it will be as bad, but that it will be close.

This is nothing near, and never looked to be.

I totally resonate. Occasionally it's a constant roar. It makes me want to stay up to see what happens. I doubt if it will be like 87 (if it is no doubt I'll wake up) but I know what you mean by feeling it could possibly become close

"Could possibly"... so no, as you've just demonstrated yourself, the person in question didn't claim it will be close.

Semantics, but words mean things.

I think looking at previous models and I am sure Surrey will confirm we are expected to get the peak between 3pm-6pm

Later on today, maybe around 6pm? My neighbour said the news was saying the storm would go on for longer than first expected this evening/tonight, not sure how accurate this is.

So saying it could get close to being as bad as 1987 is not comparing to 1987?

Is it just me?

And it's certainly feeling more significant than previous storms this 'winter'

To be honest I don't care what you think.  I am not so stupid as to be so bold as to say it was going to be 1987 again as i'd open myself up to people like you.  There are too many of them about.

Jesus you are like a Dog with a bone...... let it go will you...... we are all trying to enjoy this weather event your bikering is just making it worse!!!!

If we get an event like 1987 then WOW what a talking point it will be .... I remember it so if that happens during daylight hours then hope everybody is safe!!!!

If it doesn't then where is the harm ........ just leave it

Saying it won't be like '87 is also comparing.

You seem to expect a level of accuracy from others that you're not willing to demonstrate yourself. I haven't seen anyone categorically say this will be as bad as '87 but even if someone had it doesn't make it so :D

Wind definitely increasing here after a short lull at lunchtime, some potent gusts whipping through! Hope my polytunnel survives :sorry:

Blimey...Even saying it's 'nothing near as bad as '87' is comparing...And, let's face it, the 1987 storm is the benchmark...:D
