Doesn't look a patch on Storm Barney or the unnamed one that followed the day after down here. I think rain will be more of an issue here tonight.

Stay safe up north. Definitely looks like a belter for you!

The red warning mentions possible gusts in excess of 100mph.

Quote

Shetland will experience the strongest winds, with gusts quite widely above 90mph and perhaps over 100mph in places.

Quote

Expect dangerous conditions including structural damage and debris, disruption to power supplies and widespread disruption to transport, and take action to secure loose items.

Why do red warnings get issued so late surely it makes sense to issue them a day before so people can prepare.

Quite a few criteria need to be met before a red warning is issued, they need to be 100% certain which areas will be affected by the extreme weather, if they issued a red warning yesterday and then the storm track changed slightly then they would have to change the warning, red warnings only cover small areas so any slight change to the forecast could have large implications for communities & local authorities involved. There were already amber 'be prepared' warnings in place so people knew it was going to be bad.

Shetland is going to get rocked, i mean red warnings don't happen often.

Hurricane like conditions for a while there today, i would expect

Time to seek out some webcams, if they have power

Biggest gust in our village was a mere 72mph. One tiny power failure early in the morning, off, then back on again, so I really can't complain! All calm here now, there's even some blue sky! Turned very cold, 3.5c,sleet and rain showers. I would not like to be in Shetland right now, I hope everyone up there stays safe!
