Glencoe this morning.

Even Glenshee much further East caught some last night. The picture is the A90 to the South and down from the ski area.

Not snow related, But an interesting read.

"Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in Britain - occasionally experiences periods at its summit when the air is bone dry.

The revelation that this notoriously wet peak should have times of near-zero humidity comes from the analysis of a newly recovered, unique data-set .

Weather observations were made around the clock by a group of men who lived atop Ben Nevis from 1883 to 1904.

Their records have now been digitised for modern science by volunteers."

I hope no-one minds as this post is only loosely connected to Snow on the Scottish Mountains, but look at this extraordinary photo of mountain bikers at the start of the Glencoe 'McAvalanche' race yesterday.

Already one down and others hurtling towards him/her. They must all be bonkers! :oldlaugh:

Ben Lawers yesterday courtesy of Kenmore Photography. Nice to see more new snow.

Also note how low Loch Tay is at Kenmore. Indicative of the very dry Spring and late Winter.

There has been new snow this week but if the forecasts are correct it should mostly melt this week in mainly dry and a bit milder weather. You will still have some older snow to cross near the top though.

So eight patches left, four of which are likely to melt by the end of the month leaving the usual two on Braeriach and the Aonach Beg patch to be the only hope of surviving until lasting snow arrives. From the reports it us unlikely that Anoch Beg will last through September and Braeriach would need early October snow to make it. If Braeriach melts that will be three years in a row which Iirc is the total number of melts in the whole of the twentieth century.

Anyone know if they survived?

The two usual  Braeriach patches are still there but getting small. The recent snow is not enough to be considered lasting so they need cold weather with snow soon. I have not heard anything about the one remaining patch on Aonach Beag in theNevis range but it was very small a couple of weeks ago and probably even more in need of new snow to survive.

Everything else did melt last month.

Snap of Met O automated forecast for Ben Macdui this week. Temps just a degree or so too high with frequent sleet and wet snow amongst the rain. MWIS forecast similar with sleet forecast on the tops fir the next few days.
