With Aonach Beag now gone, the only question that remained was 'Is Garbh Choire Mor's 'Sphinx' still extant?'

The answer to that question was answered today by Attila Kish, who ventured there in improving weather. As evidenced by the photos, he witnessed the last dying gasps of Scotland's last snow.

Our estimate is that this snow will be gone by tomorrow, if not sooner. I'm inclined to say tomorrow, as the water bottle for scale is fairly large. There is an outside chance a flake or two will be visible tomorrow when Alistair Toddand I go.

Whatever happens tomorrow, history will record this snow as having melted on 30 September, only the sixth time in this corrie it has ever happened.

A great natural wonder for sure and I love the idea they have 300 years of observations. I am sure people are thinking that its only a matter of time before there are two or more years in a row when the snow patches don't hold on during the warmer seasons... 

How small does it have to get before they say it is no longer a snow patch? What happens if the Sphinx shrinks to, say, 20cm in length by tomorrow but is then  covered over by fresh snowfall on top of it for days/weeks...it would be difficult to know whether it is still there.

What particular weather anomaly over the last few months/or couple of years since the big snow falls of 2015 has caused this to happen again? Heat or lack of snowfall at useful times or both?

The answer Styx is both.A lack of snowfall in winter or the extended winter and warmer averages in summer.You only have to go back to the 1800s when Cross fell in the pennines held snow for 10 months of the year gives an indication how the climate has changed .

With the melting of the last piece of snow in Scotland (and, by extension, the UK) on the 1st October at Garbh Choire Mor, Braeriach, I thought that some folk might like to see the melt dates of other patches across the country in 2017.

Should be some wintry precipitation on the tops tomorrow in any showers, uppers look cold enough. I remember seeing snow down to 300 metres in mid Oct 2011 in less than cold uppers.

We've had snow falling in October and Sleet in September so I wouldn't be surprised to see Snow on the Scottish hills at this time of year. I would have thought it was fairly normal although less frequent these years.

Reports on the interweb say there is a covering of snow in parts of the Caingorms and Nevis Range.

Indeed. Looking at the Ben Nevis forecast from the Met Office there should be a decent covering on top of the mountain before the weekend is out.
