They've actually had a some good winters up there despite being mild and wet in England.

Last year wasn't great but the year before, I think, I've never seen snow so deep at Glenshee. That winter we had relentless cold rain low down but the hills got plastered.

'Walkhighlands' today put out some terrific photos of Loch Affric in the NW Highlands - taken this morning and showing a hard frost and inversion fog over the Loch.

One of my favourite walks but I don't think I've ever seen it quite that stunning.

Some decent snowfall for the scottish highlands over the coming days, thanks to atlantic fronts invading, with polar maritime air edging in at times, classic freeze-thaw territory which is good for consolidation of snow. The only downside to such conditions will be the very strong winds and gales which will probably put most of the ski resorts out of action at times over the christmas period. Regardless the christmas period is notorious for delivering such weather, it lays the foundations, but it isn't normally until January when the snow base is good for skiing.

Lakeland fells should see a bit of cover over the days ahead, after a very barren snow starved green period, will make for some nice scenes, but again the strong winds, won't make for pleasant winter walking weather - this will be the sixth wet windy christmas period in a row..

14.9C here today but should be short lived as we're due heavy snow showers and high wind this time tomorrow. Hopefully today's temperatures won't therefore do too much damage. Inevitably it'll do some though, especially if the snow that's fallen hasn't been consolidated/pisted.

Very mild here today as well, not quite reaching your tropical temperature over in Kemnay, but still like summer at 13c. All change later on today as you rightly point out and what could be a decent snowy boxing day morning.

BBC weather:

Yellow warning of snow

From:

Frequent, blustery showers will fall as snow above about 150 m, and as a mixture of rain, sleet and snow to lower levels. Gusts of wind of 40-50 mph, and much more on high ground, will lead to temporary blizzard conditions at times. Fresh snow accumulations of 5-10 cm are expected above about 200 m, and of 10-15 cm above about 400 m. At low levels a couple of cm may accumulate locally, with icy patches on untreated surfaces.

Please be aware of the risk of hazardous driving conditions and disruption to transport.

As for the state of the Scottish hills, what a diffrence a day makes from Polar Ms post yesterday:

http://www.cairngormmountain.org/base-station-webcam/

The Lecht, which was looking very snowy last night, has sadly suffered the same fate overnight.

Back to the drawing board.....

Just been out for a wander with the youngest and there's some serious drifting going on in a strong wind.

Edit: whoops, meant this to go in regional thread, oh well.

The outlook is certainly looking better in the models today for winter sports in the Highlands.

The boxing day snow has allowed both the Lecht and Cairngorm to offer, albeit limited snow sports. The webcams show just how marginal the decision to open must have been.

A poor season so far for all the Scottish ski centres. Hopefully above starts to improve the outlook.

It sort of makes me feel a bit better knowing even the mountains are struggling

On the subject of struggling and Scottish mountains:

A lucky ending given the area they were found in has proved deadly in the past.
