Despite the current heatwave sweeping the UK, Iain Cameron still managed to spend some of his weekend hidden under drifts of snow on Ben Nevis.

Every year, snow-patch enthusiast Iain Cameron conducts a survey of the snow surviving into the summer on the Scottish mountains. This year there’s a bit less than usual.

There is still some hope for snow surviving to next Winter. The main patch at Aonach Beag is deep and wide and the Point 5 gully patch at the Ben is still deep. This could be the first year that the West patches outlast Braeriach!

Not surprised by that. None forecast for the next few days though.

Too late for the Sphinx patch at Braeriach though which is almost gone.  For the first time recorded snow patches in the Nevis range will outlast the Garbh Coire Mor patches as there are still sizeable patches on Nevis and Aonach Beag

A dusting at the top of Cairngorm this morning. The very highest parts of the Nevis range also have a covering.

Here’s Helen skiing at the top of Cairngorm this morning. Perhaps not a very long run though?

For anyone interested the Sphinx patch at Braeriach is still hanging on. Tiny but with a couple of inches of fresh snow on top and cornices on the cliff above. Could collapse and leave a further cover?  Snow and cold forecast for the next couple of days but next week looking warmer so it could just be a last hurrah.

A stunning panorama taken by Iain Cameron on Sat 22nd Sept with a dusting of snow on the tops. View from Aonach Mor towards Carn Mor Dearg with the Allt Daim snaking northwards.

The Sphinx patch at Braeriach has melted. The first time it has melted two years in a row and the first time that any snow away from the Garbh Coire Mor has outlasted it. Shame s a fair bit of snow forecast this week for the higher hills. Picture again from Iain Cameron.

I imagine those on this thread would love this book.  I did and do.

Some idea of conditions a couple of days ago?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-45705249

And how some idiots don’t anticipate it. Second lot in last week to go up there without proper equipment. There is more snow now after last night and today.

Glencoe this morning. Wonderful.

As a skier what I like about smaller resorts is their flexibility to open up their slopes as soon as they've had a decent snowfall. I just wish I didn't live so far away.....

40-50cm reported in the central Highlands. With winds recorded up to about 70mph, there should be some whopping snowdrifts somewhere. I have yet to find pictures. The one above is a nice taster, though.

Some sad news..

https://www.facebook.com/groups/snowpatchesscotland/permalink/981968862003165/

Some very sad news today. Dr Adam Watson passed away peacefully this morning. Not only a snow patch legend, but the person most responsible for our understanding of so much in Scotland's uplands. His daughter Jenny wanted people to know.

From a personal perspective, I owe him a debt of gratitude that I'll never be able to repay. An inspirational man.

Oh wow! What a stunning photo of an amazing cornice on Aonach Mor 11th Feb 2019. Very brave to stand under that!
