A very mild and Wet December also had the highest average wind since I started making a record of the speeds since 2002. The warmest December we've recorded since 1955 breaking the previous December by 1.1C. Nearly matched November temperature wise. Nighttime temperatures were higher than April this year.

Average Temp 8.6C

Average Max 11.3C, Average min 5.8C, Highest Max temp 14.4C on the 18th and 19th Lowest day temp 6.7C on the 12th,  Highest Min 11.1C on the 17th,  Lowest Min 0.3C on the 13th

Average wind speed 11.6mph Average Gust 40.2 mph Max Gust 65mph on the 6th,  Highest Wind speed at the time of recording 24mph on the 5th, 6th, 19th and 22nd

Seems the South and South East were the best spots for this incredible month with regards to the temperature

Abnormally, exceptionally, extraordinarily, immensely warm... By a huge margin warmer than any March and milder than any November since 2003. Warm and at times, strong southerly winds dominated with not a single day or night registering below normal. Also very dull, duller than December 2010 but with near normal rainfall.

Highest Maximum 15.6c (19th)

Lowest Maximum 9.8c (13th)

Lowest Minimum 3.2c (9th)

Highest Minimum 13.7c (26th)

Average maximum 13.1c (5.0c above normal)

Average Minimum 9.9c (6.8c above normal)

Mean temperature 11.5 (5.9c above normal)

With an average minimum of 9.9c - that's slightly warmer than June's average minimum in the CET zone!!

December - Hobart, Tasmania

Warm and dry. This was Tasmania's warmest December on record (  statewide monthly temperature average beginning in 1911 ). The departure from the previous record ( 1994 ) was just 0.15C, so no comparison to the UKs extraordinary month. The December 2015 anomaly was 2C above the 1961-1990 average.  Hobart on the south east coast was cooler, falling just outside the top 5 for warmest Decembers ( city records beginning in 1882 ), with seabreezes and weak cool southerly wind changes capping daily maximums in the south. Heat across Tasmania was widespread over the Christmas period giving Hobart its hottest Christmas day on record and the years highest temperature. It was followed by the wettest day of the month on Boxing Day ( 15mm ) with a shallow, colder onshore breeze under a heavy bank of cloud. The big temperature decline over 24hrs was unusual. The first half of the month was slightly less settled and variable; the most notable feature being a gusty cold change on the afternoon of the 11th with mountain snow, settling to 700m. Temperature anomalies below 1981-2010.

Average maximum:  22.5 ( +2.1 )

Average minimum: 12.2 ( +0.8 )

Rainfall:  35mm ( average 56mm )

Rain days ( +1mm ): 7/from 11

Extremes in daily temperature for December ( records since 1882 )

Highest maximum:  36.0.....25th ( record 40.6 in 1897 )

Lowest maximum:  15.0.....26th ( record 10.2 in  1964 )

Highest minimum:  19.4.....20th ( record 23.9 in 1920 )

Lowest minimum:  5.0.....12th ( record 3.3 in 1906 )

Some stats from my weather station..

Note all data is from the period midnight to midnight as my set up doesn't really let me do 9am-9am (not sure how much difference this makes or how many posters use that meteorological day?)

Temperature:

Mean (5 minute): 11.3c (+6.0C!)
Mean (max + min) 10.9c (+5.6C)

Mean maximum: 13.3c
Mean minimum:  8.4c

Highest max: 15.1c (19th - at 23:45) - this does not actually beat 15.4c in 2007 (though not far to my west, some sites were at 16C at 4am on the 17th!)
Lowest max: 10.9c (11th)

Highest min: 13.4c (26th)
Lowest min: -0.6c (9th) yes, there was one air frost..

Rainfall:

Total: 98.2mm - about average
Wettest Day: 17.6mm (30th) - more fell just to the west (squall line type segment tracked over the same place for an hour) causing local flooding of streams/rivers.

Wind:

Average: 8.9mph
Windiest day: 15.1mph average (26th)
Max gust: 44mph (30th)

Graphs:

temp, dewpoint and rain:

 568c4c7048cb5_dectemprain.thumb.png.0849

pressure and wind:

568c4c759f95e_decpressurewind.thumb.png.

Some interesting facts:
- The highest maxima in December 2010 (10.4c) was lower than the lowest maxima in December 2015 (10.9c).
- The mean of 11.3c is just about warmer than October 2015 (11.2c), and only 0.2c cooler than May (11.5c).
- The mean minimum (again midnight-midnight) of 8.4c was warmer than all months bar July and August!! (just beating June's 8.3c).
- However, the mean maxima was just about lower than November (by 0.1c), and all months apart from Jan and Feb.

This page http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/~brugge/PREV.html shows 8 stations in southern England (that display a mean, some don't) where the average temperature was at least 6C above normal, the highest being +6.4C at Benson and Bournemouth Hurn. It's bonkers.

I think the Met Office should produce an anomaly map on a different scale to normal, like they did for December 2010, so it doesn't just show most of the country in the deepest red colour (+3.5C).

Some rather distressing December stats, which is the first calendar month ever recorded at the Dollar Academy (and boy, what a month!):

Average temp: 6.8

Max temp: 14.2

Min temp: -3.8 (however I recorded -6.7 on a sensor placed at 1.5m over grassed roof, clearly the fact that the station is sitting on a roof is not good when it comes to minimum temperatures especially)

Total rainfall: 287.2mm (wowzers)

18 days with a max temp of or over 10C

3 air frosts measured

3 days of falling snow (believe it or not, I suppose it's still Scotland)

December 2015

Warmest Max: 15.9°C (19th)
Coldest Max: 6.8°C (13th)
Warmest Min: 11.4°C (19th)
Coldest Min: -0.3°C (13th)

Average Max: 11.8°C (+4.9°C)
Average Min: 6.6°C (+3.8°C)
Overall Average: 9.2°C (+4.4°C)

Rain: 65.2mm (104%)
Wettest Day: 12th (10.8mm)
Sunshine: 44 hours (84%)

Air Frosts: 1
Sleet/Snow Falling: 0 days
Snow lying at 0900: 0 days
Dry Days: 7
Wet Days: 24
Days With Rain >1.0mm: 15
Days With Rain >10mm: 1
Thunder Days: 0
Days With Fog: 1

The warmest December on record, beating the previous warmest in 1988 by a whole 1.9°C. The month was predominantly dull, mild and wet and with four days recording gales. Unusually for such a mobile month, pressure didn't fall below 997.9hPa. Perhaps the most notable stat was the consistency of the milder than average weather. Only 6 days had a maxima that failed to reach double figures and only 4 days had minima below 4°C. Just one day was below average all month and only three had means below 7°C. Sunshine was at a premium, with 9 days recording over 1 hour per day or more all month. The month set several records, with the max of 15.9°C on the 19th being the warmest in 36 years since my records began, as was the mean min, mean max and low max.

Only just thought about doing this but here's a comparison graph between December 2010 and 2015:

56a935a22fec3_Dec20102015comparisonlarge

The temp in 2015 only went below the temp at the same time in 2010 very briefly on the 29th and late on the 31st.
The difference in mean temp between the two months was 10.9C (0.4C and 11.3C).. the average yearly range is only just above this!

Is that -13/14C I can see?

I don't remember getting below -3C anywhere in that month. That's some record low!

Indeed it is! We had a min of -14.0C on the 25th.. best Christmas day ever!
Also had -12.2C in Jan 2010.

And that's really surprising if you didn't. Though my minima were helped by still having about 6 inches of snow lying due to getting lucky on the 20th (which brought the total to about 25cm before slight compaction/melting)
