Sure is a day full with weather thoughts goes to those folk and properties which are endangered by rising flood water with Christmas not so far away an awful time for the year for it - any time of year is bad! Unfortunately the NW is prone to such events once in a 10 year event this one is I imagine? The worst is yet to come...

They should have increased the red area south earlier given the river levels in Lancaster and Kendal and the fact they have had almost the same level of rain as the rest of Cumbria, it seemed likely that they would have significant flooding.

To be fair there has been a fair bit of damage (wind) around the North East too but I hadn't noticed until reading the reports, even thought it has been a wild day.  It just shows the extent of this storm system considering the eye is miles away from us.

River levels continuing to rise along the Tyne now due to peak around 11pm so hopefully Corbridge might be spared?

Yeah, a petrol station's roof was  torn off here. Roads had to be closed.

Just received confirmation from a mate that part of her roof has blown off in Fullwell, Sunderland.  Thought the winds were dying down but appears not!!!

Wind has gotten up here quite a bit in the last half hour or so. Was in Keswick on Wednesday and it was wet, but nothing like this! My heart goes out to all caught up in this... Stay indoors and stay safe all!

Think we could be hitting 200mm plus 24 hr totals over Cumbria and southern Scotland before the rain clears, though I'm sure some windward upslope spots in the Lake District have seen 250mm+. Here's the top ten 24hr station totals via wxonline:

Shap (249 m) 171.0 mm
Keswick (81 m) 156.0 mm
Eskdalemuir (242 m) 113.0 mm
Capel Curig (215 m) 111.0 mm
Glasgow Bishopton (59 m) 84.0 mm
Tulloch Bridge (236 m) 77.0 mm
Spadeadam II (286 m) 62.0 mm
Castlederg (50 m) 55.0 mm
Strathallan (35 m) 50.0 mm
Loch Glascarnoch (264 m) 48.0 mm

According the NetWx-SR the rain is going to intensify over the next few hours!! Easing overnight but still raining tomorrow morning before clearing...

Halfway up the side of a hill here in Northumberland, and its the wind thats our real problem! My wx station is recording gusts at 65 Mph.

We have lost a couple of tiles earlier on today,  but its the constant droning noise that the wind is making thats getting on the familys nerves!

The river Rede just below our home is currently 2 Meters Plus above normal, and subject to flood warnings !

Another small river feeding into the River Rede is very close to flooding a neighbours home..... Sooner this storm moves away the better.

On a different tack! Since when did we have an official "Stormy Season" Seems like the new buzz word from the Met office

Cheers all, and stay safe .  Paul.

Meanwhile,, David Cameron sends a sympathy tweet and orders another £10m of missiles to be dropped somewhere in the middle east.

High tide is at 2am - thats when the rivers will have nowhere to go to...

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
