Well the rain band has eased a little and has moved a bit further north sadly not enough though and it will return south later. Yet in Sheffield it's  a windy warm day spring like day and only 0.2mm of rain since 09:00. Winds gusting over 50mph though.

A nice day here. Dry and mild, 13.7°C.

For once i'm glad we have this microclimate.

Hoping for a good old proper storm next week.

5 Severe flood warnings issued for the Aire - In the center of Leeds. At least the TV crews wont have to go far for this one as it will be in the offices of a couple of them.

Rain is just relentless, rivers are rising and fields are turning into lakes and spilling out over the roads and some drains look like mini water fountains! Quite a trying 30 mile drive to and from Carlisle as the A595 is nearly impassable in places so came back down the M6 instead.... Nightmare. Looking at the radar just now the heaviest rainfall is currently over parts of Cumbria with some small pink areas indicating rainfall in excess of 16mm per hour.

Rainfall totals over the last 12hrs, some large amounts for many areas but so far totals appear slightly less where the red warnings are in force. The pinks are indicating amounts of 100mm+ and it's still chucking it down.

Just checked upstream on the Aire and the levels are falling however this will change when the rain returns south

The EA think it will peak in the center of Leeds at around 23:00 i.e. in 6 and half hours time. Given the upper catchment areas were peaking this morning, its not surprising there is such a delay as to when it peaks in Leeds.

Takes time to work it's way down stream. Better falling than still rising though.

Can't see any pink that would be 250mm an hour which scale are you using???

Front now beginning to return southwards by the look of the radar.

Last windy day of the year here. Still looking very interesting for areas exposed to southerly wind on Wednesday plus more unwanted heavy rain shown.

Just back from spending Christmas night in Leeds. It took nearly two hours to get back to Keighley. It's mayhem out there - Ilkley, Shipley and parts of Bingley are inaccessible. Never seen anything like it - people are driving to sight see...bizarre...

Humans like to see disasters and just end up hampering the emergency services who need roads clear and don't need bystanders getting in the way.

The rain is relentless I can't ever remember seeing scenes like that over the North West currently. The Tyne is about to burst it's banks up stream again and Rothbury under threat from the River Coquet in Northumberland. I am currently sat in the dark after a power cut. Cameron needs to get his finger out now and spend a hell of a lot of money in better defenses. Poor folk out there over Xmas flooded out of their properties me heart and thoughts go out to them all.
