  1. 1. Should we keep the #NameOurStorms scheme?

    • Yes, I like it!
    • No, it's a waste of time.
    • Not bothered.

It's absolutely garbage this system.

You have ex hurricanes that will screw this system up, the flooding in Cumbria was seen by the media as storm Desmond when infact it was a quasi stationary system that was the cause of the problem.

The worst weather event is the season thus far, the northern England flooding was also a quasi stationary front but this was not named or it's parent low.

If the Met Office's purpose is to make people more aware of weather related problems then they should have named the last system.

The storms are only named (in this pilot scheme ) for wind strength currently, it's something they are reviewing

Will the Met Office and Met Eireann continue the naming of the storms again this autumn/winter?

I've no idea, but I would like to hope so, I'm useless with dates, it's a lot easier talk about a named storm at a later date.

I only support giving them names on two conditions: 1. That they don't sound like some senile old character from a british soap (Storm Desmond?), and 2. That the names be amusing and memorable (e.g. Storm Wilberforce The Wild, Bertha Bedlam, Horrid Hilda, Rick Astley etc)

I seem to remember some argument coming from american meteorologist and storm chaser, Chuck Doswell, saying its a waste of time, even for hurricanes. That guy is pretty convincing and he has ruthless logic.

See tweets

I'd wanted to know if Lawrence, Mary and Orla were going to be used, as they didn't get to them last season and they were on the 2015/16 list

Not sure why it is still a pilot scheme when it was a pilot last year?

Letters not included are to keep in line with the naming conventions of the National Hurricane Centre in the US, so all storms in the north Atlantic follow the same pattern, so no Q, U,X, Y or Z

Holly would be an appropriate name for a snow event. Can autumn stay calm enough to leave that one for around Christmas time. :cold-emoji:

Hubby's name on there - most definitely a windy one.

The storm naming season runs from October 1st 2016 to end of September 2017

Storms will be given names if they warrant an Amber or Red warning

As far as I'm aware there hasn't been a storm or Hurricane Lauren, which is quite frankly, offensive.

If the GLOSEA is anything to go by, we'll be lucky to get as far as Ewan! Though, to have Holly around Christmas would be good timing.

What if the remains of a hurricane hits the UK? Such storms have always been named after the Hurricane: Charley, Debbie, Flossie.

They keep their original name, so remnants of..., ex-Hurricane ... This did lead to some confusion last year

are they going to run all year, is it not just a autumn/winter (early spring) thing. We won't get new names again til 1st Oct 2017 if the scheme continues but  it should be seen as a half year season. Or are you envisaging some weather upsets, like HUrricane Alex perhaps

It looks like it will be all year yes

"The next phase of the pilot project will run for a full year from 1 October 2016 and will be adapted to address some of the challenges we encountered in the first season. One of these is to include more than one weather type, specifically rain if its impact could lead to flooding as advised by the Environment Agency, SEPA and Natural Resources Wales flood warnings. So in future 'storm systems' would be named on the basis of impacts from wind but could also include the impacts of rain and snow."
