Fantastic effort as usual, I have to say i'd looked at the analogues posted earlier in Autumn and I went for a mild Dec, Mild Jan and Cold Feb (in a private heads up to my friends on 7th Nov) with any SSW coming later, having seen the actual research that's gone into this though, I have my doubts now, I hope this forecast is right though, I want cold earlier, and can always advise on a change to winter tyres nearer the time!!!,

GOOD LUCK.

Thank you for the update. Are there any records of what the Stratospheric influences were like during winter 1997/98 that could be compared with those anticipated for this winter? It is already noteworthy that this winter has started in a markedly different manner to that one, where the first half of December 1997 brought benign conditions ahead of being locked in mild stormy conditions and then very mild and dry conditions for the remainder of the winter.

Sorry to say, but I think the early SSW won't be accomplished. Perhaps later on?

I think that's its probably safe to say that one is unlikely before mid January now. Still the reasoning behind it occurring still holds true for later in January, and we are seeing the atmospheric Stratospheric responses that we expected to see. Still feel quietly confident that we will get that SSW eventually though.

Hi Chiono

Are you still forecasting cold weather in January, or do you think it's more likely to happen later in winter now, if at all?

Many Thanks

Far too early to even consider ruling that out. Though already I have learnt a lot this year for future years and forecasts.

Coming back to this for Jan

"January is likely to start in a similar vein to the end of December but this month is likely to see a sharp turnaround to far colder conditions which could last for a couple of weeks"

A pretty good call so far out
