I had to chuckle when looking at this evenings ECM.

Icelandic high forming at T168, 24hrs later it has already linked up with the ever popular Euro High and is sinking SE fast.

Which ever way you look at the charts, the cold air misses us.

What a joke.

Could you post some charts also to back up your post ?

I don't post in the mod thread, so I don't need to.

My post was regarding to the fact that it is becoming tiresome reading one liners that don't benefit many readers.

Your post is also an example of this.

december can be written off now as a wretched month.i doubt we'll see even a frost letalone snow.

Still expecting a cold spell in march or april, when the stronger sun will melt any snow rapidly.

I was down at local wildfowl centre and some geese were mating.

Surely that's not normal for late December?

If it goes cold next month, some of the wildlife is in for a shock. Especially if it freezes up for any length of time.

It's an ill wind

In Cornwall the frogs are courting, in Yorkshire ospreys haven’t bothered migrating to Africa, and in Warwickshire the bats are flying around instead of hibernating. Dragonflies, which should have died in October, live on.

However, theirs is not the most bizarre animal behaviour spotted this month. The great British tourist, renowned for its own winter migration to seek winter warmth, has chosen instead to go somewhere there is actually a winter to speak of.

Tour operators specialising in Arctic holidays have reported an unexpected Christmas bonanza this year, as holidaymakers seek to get away from near-record-breaking temperatures to go somewhere really, really wintry.

According to figures released by Newmarket Holidays, all of their 11 winter flights to Pajala, a resort in Lapland, are sold out; bookings at Canterbury Travel, another operator specialising in trips to Lapland, have increased by 15 per cent.

We had lying snow for around a week at the end of March 2013, and that was only a 4-5 inch fall. I remember it being light still at 7pm with a good covering of snow outside for a fair few days. Colder parts of the UK probably saw it lying for much longer.

The difference 5 years makes. Temperatures of the morning of 19/12 in both 2010 and 2015. Pershore was -19c in 2010, rounded up to 15c yesterday morning!

The ext ecm anomaly continues to downplay and weaken the amplification of the trough and extended European high, as shown at T240,

ecmwf-ens_z500a_nhem_11.thumb.png.2ba04c

and by T360 a return to zonality is just about accomplished with temps near normal.

Getting impatient, its just never ending rain, cloud and wind, thoroughly depressing at what should be a cheerful time of the year. I suppose today is the best in a while because the sun is trying to get out and i can see a little blue sky.

Surely you've posted this in the wrong thread - or are you doing the thing you've said you think doesn't happen here - mild ramping?!:D

ECM has another 125mm for Cumbria over the next 10 days. I really feel for you guys up there, it's just relentless.

Yes, though I initially enjoyed the cold and snow in Nov / Dec 2010 by the time it was getting close to Christmas I was getting desperate for some warmer days.

Extended deep cold is fine until...

1. Your central heating stops working because the condensate pipe has frozen (under the floor) and the gas man is unable to come for two days as he has loads of other call outs. And it is -18C overnight with -9C daily maximum.

2. The external drain pipe has frozen (all 40 feet of it) and when somebody flushes the loo upstairs the inevitable happens. And the plumber tells you that there's nothing that can be done until the thaw comes.

3.  It takes half an hour to get the door open on your car as it is covered in a layer of (very) solid ice. And without winter tyres you're going to be sliding all over the place anyway as salt is not effective below -10C. And most public transport is off.

4. When the thaw does start you're going to have burst pipes (under the floor boards again in my case), stonework on your property may be damaged by the freeze/thaw and the roads have so many potholes that a damaged tyre or puncture is inevitable.

5. And if you're really unlucky you'll have burst pipes elsewhere that mean you have no water to your property but the ground will remain frozen for weeks on end making access impossible.

Thankfully this latter one didn't happen to me, the others.....

Thankfully I didn't have any of that, December 2010 was probably my favourite ever month. Getting up to -12c with a blanket of snow was just magical.

Not at all it's just I don't post in the other thread. Hardly mild ramping as there is no mention of mild but just, for what it's worth, my general assessment of the ecm ext output to T360. No big deal.

Nick, I loved it at first.

It was after a week of ice days and extreme cold.

When it occasionally got above freezing it was fine

To be fair I was living in an old property at the time, unlike now. I also now have winter tyres.

And mine Nick, absolute 1 off though of course, 2 mega cold spells, but turned less cold here on 10th with a full thaw, also another full thaw on 28th

shame as winter was over in the south on 8th Jan

I think you'll need to post in the alternative universe thread until all the rose tinted specs have been lost or abandoned.

The snow was amazing that December.

It was proper dry, powder snow rather than the wet, heavy stuff we normally get.

Hillwalking in my local hills was fantastic.

I never had more than six inches lying in the streets because I'm in the snow shadow of the highlands when the weather comes from the North or North East.

When the thaw did come around Boxing day it actually took two weeks for the ice to finally disappear off the pavements which made Yaktrax very handy for a while.

Perhaps you would care to explain why you consider my assessment of the ext. ecm is rose tinted because as far as I can see it's a perfectly fair reflection of the output. I must say I find it rather amusing that my posts get continuously rubbished for being 'allegedly mild biased', something I strongly refute, when plenty of outrageous cold nonsense passes without comment in the other thread. But the that's what the cold mafia want to read.
