First time this winter I had to force the car door open due to ice at 8.30pm! Hope everyone had as good a night as we had! Here's to a cold snowy and icey winter ahead :)

Happy new year everyone. Slippery footpaths on the way back from the pub, coldest night of the winter so far.

I'm in work so I'm away from my weather station so I don't know the temp but a very hard frost. I have to go out soon and throw some salt about the car park or they'll all complain in the morning lol I'll have to unlock the car and see what it's says the temperature is.

I had to force the car doors open earlier in the month I forgot to rub some oil on the seals so ill probably be stuck this morning too lol.

Cold rain all day. Miserably driving rain down on us. Better than the warm rain muck of a couple of weeks back though!

Happy New Year everyone! Miserable enough day here, freezing hard last night though. Made for a brisk walk to the pub :D.

The flooding is getting pretty bad around here. An underground river outside of Cahir has surfaced and places are being flooded for the first time on record. Many roads are completely closed off and the electricity has been pretty inconsistent.

Cork Airport finished the month 402.5mm, smashing the old December and every other monthly record.

I'm not sure how a long-range forecasting system will help areas that are naturally prone to flood. Ok so we may know about very wet spells a bit more in advance but how is that going to stop the flooding? People already knew days in advance what areas were going to flood and measures were put in place to minimise it. The problem has got nothing to do with forecasting it and everything to do with bad planning, no dredging, lack of investment in flood defences, etc. The best model in the world will never change that.

If I were in Met Éireann I think I would be a bit miffed at the Taoiseach's comments. It's almost as if he's blaming them for not forecasting it.

What comments did he make? I don't really watch local news...

That there would be a new long-range forecasting system at Met Éireann. That is good, but it seemed like it was somehow to give hope to people affected, like  "Don't worry, we'll have more notice in the future"

Next week looks like it could be more seasonal for ourselves. Got a bit of a mention in model threads tonight but could be some half decent PM shots from the NW. It's a long way away but something to hang on to next week.

Only one run, unlikely to happen, but that's why I follow Netweather for these wee bouts of over excitement!

Agreed, it's unlikely, the difference here is that it's quite a plausible process. It's also in line with the MJO and other drivers. Have a read of Glacier Point's posts in the MOD. He's confident of -NAO and -AO. It's certainly in line with his thoughts. I am not getting my hopes up yet, but if they're still showing these charts mid week, it will grab me by the balls!

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
