A few flashes seen from around Fort William and up on Rannoch Moor, not as wild as pre dawn this morning, but it's certainly having its moments of gustiness! Suspiciously quiet and almost calm outside right at the minute though...

It's the calm before the storm. Or calm after and before or something; 'Schrodinger's calm' maybe.

Had a red sky as the sun went down earlier. Not sure what shepherds were making of that.

Incredibly tight temperature gradient (look at the thicknesses between Iceland and our land) to throw shed loads of energy into the storm, an unnatural number of fronts, warm ones, cold ones, occlusions to pep up the fun (squall lines and torrential rain at times), a pressure gradient to match today's storm and by the looks of things to the top left, a reload of the cold we're about to get tonight and tomorrow.

Busy day at work today so not had a chance to follow Gertrude closely, she sure is painting a pretty picture on satellite. NW Coast of Norway getting savaged and the trailing front is mahoosive..

Day kicked off in style though with the PSC sighting - just wow. I love the noctilucent clouds in high summer, never really expected to see such a PSC show at 730am. This was the best I could manage on cameraphone, this pair emulated a sunrise appearing from behind dirty gerty heading East.

Found a few more pics on a facebook group , awesome.

Ahm nae expert on these, but it looks like another deep low pressure system crossing us on Monday bringing more Stormy conditions and maybe pulling in cauld air again after it blasts through?

How can an Atlantic storm be called Gertrude, of all things. It reminds of the cartoon version of Journey to The Centre of The Earth!:D

Looks like 850 temps are to drop by about 3C between now and midnight, so hopefully there's some rather less mongooseish stuff coming our way.

Gertrude is also either a cow, or Hamlet's rather pathetic mother.  Democracy for you.  If this was the 3rd Reich, it'd be called Gotterdammerung.

Wind really winding up again after an hour or so lull. If it does snow it is going to be mental outside if the wind stays as strong.

This morning mess!!!! Has since been placed into garage.

Surprised not to see reports of snow down to low levels yet given the forecast. Indeed nothing at Mar Lodge even which I assume is around 400 metres.

Mar Lodge just over 300m similar to Braemar, temp around 3c at 300m nr Aviemore so still slightly on the warm side, would say current snow level 400m upwards but dropping soon.

Edit: Is there a camera at Mar Lodge? Both Aviemore and Braemar cameras currently offline :(

I'd be surprised to be seeing reports of snow to low levels given that it's just gone nine pm, and the models didn't forecast that until gone midnight. Three hours in this current set-up moves a lot of air, and chases away the warmer uppers and the moisture to be replaced with cold uppers and low DP's at the surface too.

Cold front isn't through yet so I'm not worried... :)

Aye. Said cold front is on the radar right now over Scotland; it's the trailing edge that is supposed to see the temps / DPs drop and bring snaw.

Running maybe Inverness to Belfast right now.

Prep in NW Scotland turning wintry as a result, e.g. Braemore.

Worth watching the Braemore cams to see the transition occurring over the next few hours:

A mini squall has cleared east but has left the ground soaking wet. Just seen a flash of lightning south side Glasgow.

Just seen that bolt here. Nice

Hi, extremely turbulent for the last 30 minutes here in Cambuslang. The wind has dramatically increased, not to the same extent as 6am this morning but its wild here again. Not sure how best to describe it but lots of mini gusts which are really fierce.

It has now suddenly dropped.

Some sort of front/squall ?
