Admit I'm not feeling totally convinced that it will be a month dominated by long chilly spells (though it could throw up a few surprises still); therefore, will take an estimate of 4.9*C please.

Below is the December CET from 1659-2014 in blue, the 30 year average in red and the linear trend in black.

1EaSlqC.png

The CET this month is likely to finish somewhere between 8.6C and 9.5C after corrections. The average December following Novembers within that range is 4.1C.

The linear trend for the whole record is +0.36C per century. Following this trend gives a December CET of 4.7C.
The linear trend since 1850 is +0.55C per century. Following this trend gives a December CET of 4.9C.
The linear trend since 1950 is +0.50C per century. Following this trend gives a December CET of 4.8C.
The linear trend over the last 50 years is -0.63C per century. Following this trend gives a December CET of 4.6C.
The linear trend over the last 30 years is -4.41C per century. Following this trend gives a December CET of 4.2C.

The run of cool/cold Decembers in the last decade has given it the unusual status of having an overall cooling trend over the last few decades, the opposite of every other month.
