Sunshine levels November 2015

Would be good to know how the country is doing on the sunshine levels stakes at this stage in the month. It has been abysmally dull here since the 3rd with a blink of brightness only... and the immediate outlook promises very little sunshine neither, though signs we could see quite a sunny latter part which should help boost levels somewhat.

 

Suspect there is a NW/SE split, but also very low levels generally.

 

Anyone have the stats?

15.2 hrs here so far this month which is 69% of average for the first half of November. However 7.8 hrs of that occurred on the 1st and there have been 7 sunless days and 2 others with just 0.01 hrs of sunshine.

I would estimate a guess of 3 hrs since the start of the month. Absolutely shocking

We're on 30.2hrs so far which is a bit below average for this point in the month but nothing unusual. It has seemed a rather dull month on the face of it though as like TM mentions above, a lot of the sunshine has come in one day chunks (like today), with day after day in between with no sunshine at all.

Not at home so can't check but about 20 hours here, 8 of which came on the 01st.

Take out the 1st and I suspect many places in the west and north west will have seen a handful of hours only. Today though did bring some decent sunny spells - very welcome.

We've just had one day with slightly under 6 hours of sun, and the others between 0 and 1 hour 

 

Most of these 0, as with the weak sun it is harder for the Cumulus software to distinguish brightish/cloudy conditions from sunshine especially nearer dawn/dusk, so I may have to tweak my settings to get better estimates.

 

Certainly one of the worst spells I remember.. and like Autumn as a whole not any other weather of interest to pass the time either (apart from continuous mild-very mild temps).

47.4 hours here which is actually above average and 5 hours more than the ghastly first 16 days of September 2015 managed.

 

However over half of that was recorded in the first three days and a further 7.2 hours today leaving only 16.3 hours in the 12 days from the 4th to 15th with a very gloomy five days spell between the 4th and 8th.

 

Certainly nowhere near as bad as last year's horror show which was the dullest month for over a decade. Just 41.6 hours total last November with only 8.3 hours in 19 days between the 11th and 29th.

 

Worst aspect of this month has been the ridiculous lack of low minima/frost. Very tedious.

Distinct lack of sunshine of late. Had a few weeks of dank, mild settled weather then unsettled 10 days or so. Sunshine did come out earlier on for a few minutes, so progress i suppose

About 16-17 hours here, but around 10 were on just two days- 7th and 13th.

Aside from the occasional glimpse usually just after sunrise, other days have ben constant gloom.

Up to 29.9 hrs here after 2.4 hrs yesterday, this is just over 2 hours less than the total for the whole of November 2014.

It will undoubtedly end up a duller than average month but certainly not a record breaker as November 2002 had a total of only 29hrs.

A quick look on the met office local figures gives only 1993[26] and  1997[25] less than 29 hours in the last 50 years but happened on 16 occasions the 50 years previous,as said before the 'clean air act' !

It may be a bit grim for sunshine up north, but it's even grimmer here.  Currently on 17.6 hours for the whole month according to the Campbell-Stokes recorder at Reading University (20.5 hours on their electronic recorder), with no more sunshine expected before the end of the month - that's less than 30% of the long-term average.  15 sunless days, and the sunniest day gave us less than 4 hours.  Don't know the last time we had a duller month, but suspect it was some years ago.

 

Edit: yes, we're finishing the month with no further sunshine, as expected.  The attached graph (courtesy of Reading University's site met.reading.ac.uk/weatherdata) says it all - it's probably the dullest month here in the 13 years I've lived in Reading, although December 2010 rivals it. I'm expecting to see a dark grey dartboard feature on the MetO sunshine anomaly chart when it comes out with Reading near the centre.

I read in 'The Times' November 2015 has been the dullest November on record. Can anyone verify this? Certainly has been an exceptionally dull month, lack of clear skies has been a key factor in how mild it ended up.

 

December 2015 is starting on an equally dull note, no sunshine for the foreseeable, it really is turning into an abymsal spell of weather for anyone who like sunshine. We need sunshine at this time of year, but this weather is really starting to make for a very horrible gloomy atmosphere - thank goodness we have the Christmas lights to brighten the mood,

Our local paper confirms that this was the dullest November in 60 years of records at Reading University's weather station, and the third dullest month after the Decembers of 1956 and 2010:
