Well yes, when I retired from the Police I was self employed doing enquiries for insurance companies. One of the people I had to interview was Damian Lewis because he had his motorcycle stolen whilst living in London. At the time he was still studying his craft and only just starting to make his way in the world. In some ways I was quite surprised to see how well he finished up but of course when I saw him it was not an audition. Good luck to him.

Going further back to the days of 'Z Cars' a lot of the filming was done in the Hemel Hempstead area where I was stationed as a constable. Now in those days on the top floor of the police station we used to have a bar which was part of our social club.

One evening after finishing late turn at 10pm I went upstairs for my customary end of the shift drink when who should we find there but Stratford Johns who played Superintendent Barlow and Frank Windsor together with one of their writers. They used to come along from time to time and no doubt pick up tips from the real coppers, listen to us, learn how we talked and acted, and very probably picked up ideas for later episodes.

It was the most realistic police drama on the box at the time.

I got the impression that Stratford Johns was playing his part very much within his own character and virtually had us young Pc's standing to attention and calling him 'sir' when speaking to him, well not quite like but he really did carry the air of a senior police officer in real life.

On the other hand Frank Windsor who played Detective Sergeant John Watt, as hard as nails on screen, came over as very affable in real life and I think it is a tribute to his acting ability to be able to portray a character so different from his normal self.

Rory Bremner does his shopping sometimes at my work. Every time I see him I want to ask him to do a Tony Blair impression, but I don't want to disturb him. My wife met him and didn't know who he was :D

Many years ago on holiday in Newquay, we spent a couple of hours talking to a bloke who said he was an artist specialising in painting animals.

I can still remember him calling himself David Dhepherd and saying you may have heard of me.

With non of us knowing our turners from constables, we all said no and it was a couple of years later when I picked up one of his books, recognised them and looked at his photograph that the penny dropped.

Lovely unassuming chap.

As a music fan I've met a few musicians, most famous probably being Jools Holland, but also Latin American musicians Arturo Sandoval, Marcos Valle and Sergio Mendes.

Bumped into Russell Howard in Regents Park last summer.

Did work experience at BBC Points West so met Richard Angwin, Ian Ferguson and Jemma Cooper.

An old guy called Harry has been coming into my shop for a few years now.   Hes bought a few pictures and bits of furniture for his house in France and we always have a good chat.   His wife normally waits for him in the car outside.   I knew she was or had been a writer but thought no more of it.   last time he was in he finally revealed she is "MC Beaton" the author the Hamish MacBeth and Agatha Raisin novels (the latter - all set around the Vale of Evesham - are currently being made into a new TV series :good: )

Alastair McGowan pops in occasionally.   He was looking at an old armchair recently.   A few days later a woman showed interest in it and as a sales pitch I told her Alistair had been rather interested in buying it.   "I know," she said "hes my brother!".   But it worked cos she bought it :D

Odd he's been mentioned twice already, he compered a neighbour's 50th birthday party here in the summer.

There were various other celebs wandering about in off-duty mode e.g Naomi Cambell and Bryan Adams.

I remember being in a pub in the Cotswolds near Burford in summer 95 and there was a big marquee in the field at the back.   Apparently it was a local wedding and one of the guests was Sharon Stone.   Didnt get to see her though.   So I guess that doesnt really count ....  :D

I was hanging out backstage at a theatre while my hubby's band was rehearsing, and I was just rocking my baby daughter off to sleep in her buggy, when around the scenery curtain swept Joanna Lumley, dressed up in full Edwardian costume (on her way to her rehearsals). She looked into the buggy and exclaimed, in perfect Fine Lady accent, " Oh! A baby!", then smiled at me and swished off round the curtains. I felt very honoured!

Yes, he is related to my BIL. He comes to family events. I find it completely embarrassing how so many people suck up to him and name drop him into conversation because a) it's cringeworthy b) he's just like the rest of us and c) he's not even that famous.
