Geoffrey Howe 1926-2015

Former Chancellor, Foreign Secretary and Deputy PM Geoffrey Howe has died aged 88. He probably more remembered now for his resignation statement in the House of Commons that ended Thatcher's premiership.

The late Lord Howe had many qualities well portrayed in your balanced obituary. Not least of these was a memorably wicked wit. When in the letter to your newspaper his 1981 budget was notoriously castigated in doom-laden terms by 364 academic economists, he reacted with a sardonic definition of an economist as “a man who knows 364 ways of making love, but doesn’t know any womenâ€.
