Ruthlessness of Aussie politics.

Recommended Posts

Well another Aussie PM has been kicked out, Tony Abbott losing a leadership spill to Malcolm Turnbull who is now the new Australian PM.

Australia have had a revolving door policy for their PMs in the last 8 years. Rudd was removed by Gillard, Gillard was removed by Rudd. Now Abbott has been removed Turnbull. Turnbull was leader of the Liberals when in Opposition until removed by Abbott. By the way, Turnbull became leader when he defeated the then leader Brendan Nelson.

Aussie politics is ruthless!

A RADIO interview, a wink and a “draconian austerity†budget have earned Tony Abbott the title of “one of the world’s most unpopular Prime Ministers†from a major US newspaper.

The now famous eye movement prompted by caller ‘Gloria’ who works as a phone sex worker to make ends meet has gone global.

In an article which appears on The Washington Post homepage, the Prime Minister is accused of going from “one scandal to the nextâ€.

Hardly surprising what I`ve read about him lately.

The first opinion poll since Abbott's demise has just been released and it shows a tie between the government and the opposition ( the government has been behind continuosuly for 300 polls ). I am surprised they didn't return a better result . It looks like Mr Turnbull has his work cut out to prove he isn't just an intelligent, articulate and engaging leader ( which is a big reason why he's popular ) but that he has what it takes to move the party closer to the centre, on issues like environmental policy, budget cuts to the vulnerable and marriage equality - issues that Turnbull has championed and Abbott and his support base in parliament have been roundly condemned for showing not  much concern. If he can't do that, then Labor wins next year's election by showing stronger commitment to those things. Quite a relief though that for the time being at least we have a PM that has a bit more stature and emotional maturity than the previous one..
