Met Eireann and the UK Met Office have just announced a pilot scheme to name significant low pressure systems this autumn/winter. They are looking for name suggestions.

Thought we'd start here, with any preliminary ideas -

Daisy and Poppy or Bawbag II  ?

IMO, Jo this is a bad idea. Unfortunately, I can only see the tabloid media exploiting this with more histrionic headlines and with humorous overtones such as Windy Wendy to give UK a good blow or Bertie is going to let rip.

Yeah it does seem like a stupid idea to be honest. It seems to be an attempt to try and make our weather seem more extreme in relation to the more tropical climates where major tropical depressions actually form.

I think mostly it is to engage the media especially the social media  as a way of communicating the weather warning message. It is for the masses

I'm waiting for:

Atlantic Storm Nathan - ramped as Storm of the Century by the Daily Express, making landfall as a slight breeze and a bit of drizzle.

Esp silly if our storm is remnant of previous hurricane, you would have to choose a name which would become a surname

e.g Bertha Bawbag II

It is just a bit of fun it makes Atlantic depressions a lot easier to distinguish furthermore with it trending on the social networking sites it will get more folk interested in weather with its complexities I see no bad in this.

Don't the press unofficially name the storms anyway? St. Jude for example.

There is a volcano somewhere called "Kick em' Jenny"  I think, something like that,

Seems to be better in principle than 87 Storm or 63 Winter, you know, just a number...., more memorable perhaps, we will see.

Looking at the model output, we'll run out of names in about 3 weeks.
