Be great to get some thunder/hail tomorrow, especially after a lengthy period of static gloom (putting aside sunny Friday).

Not much to add on Supacell's assessment.  Pretty broad brush low-end CAPE across the country from midday onward as sun gets to work.  Region of greatest instability, as mentioned, shifting north and east through the day where CAPE is tied to coldest air aloft/steepest mid-levels, with slightly less cold air at 500mb intruding from the south around mid-afternoon onward. This perhaps  being offset by upper-level jet pushing in during the same period,  (perhaps) providing greater ascent, and increasing bulk shear (as also mentioned).  Fairly dry low-level air mass means lofty LCLs, as indicated by Skew-Ts- good for clean cloudscape photography.

Some rather steep lapse rates on Sunday, 30-32C difference between 850 and 500mb on GFS, thanks to very cold air aloft originating from northern Canada, 500mb temps AOB -30C. So surface heating tomorrow is going to build some impressive CBs that will produce hail and thunder, so get those cameras ready!

More on tomorrow and Storm Katie in my blog here: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=news;storyid=7251;sess=

Already a few sferics this morning and now things kicking off to the west of London.

No change to my thoughts from yesterday with a widespread convective risk across the UK today.

A VERY lively shower passing over west London now with hail, torrential rain, lightning and gusty winds. Quite impressive! Nicely defined back edge with more CB's on the horizon :D

"Day 1 Convective Outlook

VALID 06:00 UTC Sun 27 Mar 2016 - 05:59 UTC Mon 28 Mar 2016

ISSUED 08:56 UTC Sat 26 Mar 2016

ISSUED BY: Dan

Upper trough swings NEwards across British Isles through Sunday, with cold air aloft steepening lapse rates in response to diurnal heating. Scattered showers and a few weakly-electrified thunderstorms will develop, sometimes becoming organised into bands, with the greatest chance/coverage of lightning expected in the two SLGT areas - moreso in the eastern zone from S Yorks down to Lincs. Even so, only a low-end SLGT has been issued, but for many it will be the first proper convective day of the year.

Small hail is likely to accompany some of the showers, and given some LLS, particularly in the eastern SLGT, there is scope for perhaps a funnel or weak tornado."

Heavy shower passing through, one bright flash and almost instantaneous bang of thunder followed by a more distant rumble as it cleared.

Yeah, not much showing down Kent way at the moment. A cell has kicked off NE of Colchester. It's going to be hit and miss today.

A decent storm now across Lancashire, they seem to be forming into a line. Unfortunately I am caught in the void of no action between that to the north and what is left of that to the south. Generally speaking though it is a good start to the storm season.

Just watched a recording of a tree getting struck near the presentation area at the boat race!!

Impressive strike, the tree caught fire!

That'll get onto YouTube no doubt...

Is the boat race still happening, it's very blowy out here.

What an eggcellent start to the storm season (pardon the Easter pun) Had two hailstorms today with a bit of thunder and gusty winds. Still got a bit of hail settled on the grass in the shade. :drunk:
