The Alaska - Eastern Russia side of the globe is seeing lots of big gains. Nice to Scandi turning whiter too. October is usually an exciting month in this thread.

Northern Hemisphere snow cover for September was above average, but a lot lower than the last 2 years. The rankings aren't available yet, but it looks like the 14th or 15th most on record.

hi BFTV, looking at that chart, it does seem a bit 'cyclical'. i wonder if it correlates to anything. at a quick glance, i dont think its the solar cycle. any ideas?

How about Arctic lake effect snow ? 2.5 million KM2 of more open water up there at present cf 1980s

Interesting theory but nah usually you need a temperature gradient the waters stay cold all throughout the year up there unlike Lake Ontario for instance which warms more substantially during summer months.

Positive anomalies are building nicely in a westward direction - they should build substantially during the next week.

Does anybody have the stats showing extents on the first and today for several years. Somebody had a graph last year which showed how rapid the gains were.

I should say that this is what i'm wanting but for this year. The theory goes that it's the gradient of the increase south of 60N over Eurasia which makes the difference.

GFS seems to forecast a fair whack..

BOOM have some of that, nice big gains further West, almost touching Eastern Europe.

Already in Eastern Europe, because of course the eastern most geographic boundary of Europe is the Ural mountains.  :)

Some slight gains today, but nothing much to get excited about.
