I hope it isn't as dire for us as last year, even though we had a mass build of snow across NE europe, made no sense :(

Can't be any worse than last year. We had one snowfall which settled for a round 3 hours and then it melted and was warm in the afternoon. Such a shameful winter.

Let's all hope we can do much better this winter. And El Nino might be a help, like it was in 2010.

Fingers crossed!!

Here's hoping!! A 2010 winter would be very nice indeed. Or and 09. IT's been 4 years of ramping and moaning about our cursed luck in here the last few years. All those nearly scenarios that failed to materialise.  :sorry:

Yes, Russia/Siberia looks like it's going to get its first proper blast of winter in the 6-10 day range:

The models are taking much of Siberia (apart from the far eastern part plus much of n Russia into sub zero territory as we head through first week or two October.

Expect that snow chart to increase where we get any precip. Also n eastern Canada looks to be headed cold for the time of year.

Yes winter now creeping south into N.Norway too

the blocking high over there should help to keep any mild Atlantic winds at bay for some time into Occtober. The snow should now become a feature longer term up there as they soon head into the cold and dark of the Arctic winter.

Not only in the far north of Norway but further south in the mountains, signs of winter are just starting to show in the Swedish Abisko area:

Yes mate, North Cape the furthest point north in mainland Europe.

The Arctic ocean all the way north from there.

I have been fortunate to visited twice on different cruises.

The first in the July when we got to Svalbard before hitting pack ice in the sound to the port. Here i am on the deck temp.4C-it was a lovely sunny calm day with the iceflows around the ship which gradually got thicker until we ground to a halt.

post-2026-0-14837800-1443893776_thumb.jp

Unfortunately we had to turn back as we couldn't dock at Longyearbyen the main port on the island.

N.Norway- indeed much of the Atlantic coastline-is a lovely area in Summer with snow capped mountains overlooking the fjords with masses of wild flowers lower down.

The second trip  was the Northern lights cruise in March.A winter wonderland as you could imagine.

Both trips highly recommended. :)
