Storm Bettina has already affected Turkey , Bulgaria and Greece, and is now destroying all the Russian beach defences on Crimeaz and the western side has 6" of snow, moving NE into Russia.

Impressive system and it looks like it will curve around the edge of eastern Europe and up to southern Scandinavia, but much weaker. Another system which passes over the UK tonight could bring more snow to Germany, Czechia, (@stainesbloke) then Ukraine and Belarus. Not a typical start to the winter across many parts of Europe!

A very interesting end to autumn / start to winter indeed. We’ve already had several instances of snow falling and accumulating here in Czechia over the weekend, but temperatures have crept above freezing by day so it doesn’t last that long. Plus there haven’t been any hard frosts to cool the ground down. But warnings are out for tonight and tomorrow for >7cms of snow locally

Today thunderstorms developed this afternoon in Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, as a 'DANA' system (upper level cut off low / cold pool) moved over the islands.

About 30mm of rain fell in around 45 Minutes on a station in the town of Lajaras ( where I was before and during storms) and temperatures went from 18-12°C. Over 40mm in north Lanzarote with Hail and some minor mudslides. As a result of rain falling to dry ground, flash flooding was seen with people needing to be reduced by a helicopter further south in Fuerteventura, due to a barranco, ( dried up river bed) literally turning into a river.

Some photos from myself below of convection developing, then growing into thunderstorms by early afternoon and flash flooding following on.

Just transferred photos from the camera last night, and snapped the convection over Lanzarote from where I was staying just after midday that day; 15 minutes between the 2 photos, decent convection for an area with a desert climate!

it only took 10 visits to El Cotillo and my 13th time on the Island in the last 5-6 ish years (mostly in summer though) to see a storm 😂 @Kiwi

Nice little storm moving through Gran Canaria this morning, otherwise staying warm and dry on the Islands for the rest of the month.

Nice looking setup this which I've discussed in detail previously

Great look to this cyclone which will provide excellent representation of convective streamer banding with quite a good availability of CAPE considering its still February into Ireland the UK but especially France, The English Channel, Bay of Biscay and a secondary area moving toward the Tyrrhenian and Italy.

matty40s Yes totally expected, here are the wave heights from the GFS

gfs-wavehgt-atl-1.pnggfs-wavehgt-atl-1-1.png

Having a cyclone at 949hpa in that region which has been consistent in the modelling for an extended amount of time.

Is there any information on the storm in the Med at the moment? It looks quite "Medicane-y":

MedStorm.thumb.png.3ca9a3cc3d4fc0809a4cda1faddb7d03.png

Wrong time of the year I know, but impressive nonetheless.
