Its a pity there are no webcams in nearby Timisoara as the storm seems directly over there at the moment

I can confirm that!

So horrible seeing others suffer as we have but the death toll is shocking! at least our events didn't include that awful side of things?

'Things' can be replaced!

Unfortunately the Rhine is a huge river with many tributaries. It does this from time to time. And it goes very high very fast. It's not good over there right now.

The death toll is staggering. Did more rain fall than was forecast? I would have thought a death toll like this wouldn't be possible in somewhere like Germany in the present day, warning systems in place to evacuate people if rivers got beyond a certain point. I can only assume this went beyond their predictions. Some of the pictures look like a tsunami hit.

>120 dead and >1000 missing - this is catastrophic..

A lot of details seem to be missing but perhaps the floods hit during the night and caught many by surprise? You'd expect warnings of rivers bursting their banks in a normal situation?

A lot of people are not aware of natures power and the sequence of events that can put them in life threatening situations.

I looked at the Warnings before and there was a red Warning for rain throughout Germany.

Warning situation report for Germany

issued by the German Weather Service

on Tuesday, 13.07.2021, 21:00

From Thuringia and Saxony to the north and west spreading, partly severe thunderstorms, later increasingly transitioning into heavy rain. Risk of severe weather. In the west, extreme continuous rain in some areas. Development of the weather and warning situation for the next 24 hours until Wednesday, 14.07.2021,

21:00: A low pressure area over Central Europe determines the weather in Germany with moist, warm air masses.

It shifts its focus from the southeast to northern Germany and makes the weather of the next few days changeable and partly rainy. THUNDERSTORMS/HEAVY RAIN (SEVERE

WEATHER/EXTREME): Tonight from Thuringia and Saxony to Lower Saxony, Berlin/Brandenburg and NRW spreading, partly severe thunderstorms or larger thunderstorm clusters.

Heavy, locally extremely heavy rain with 30 and 50 l/sqm in a short time is likely. Accumulates over several hours 50 to 100 l/sqm (3 to 6 hours) probably. Especially initially during thunderstorms severe storm gusts, occasional hurricane-like gusts (Bft 10 - 11, 90 to 115 km / h) and larger hail not excluded.
During the day after only a short calming, revived thunderstorm
activity. Initially, especially in the northern half, in the course of the day to the north and west as well as parts of the western center shifting severe thunderstorms with heavy rain around 30 l / sqm, hail and storm gusts probably. Locally extremely heavy rain around 50 l/sqm is not excluded. Multi-hourly (3 to 6 hours) in the west also up to 80 l/sqm. In addition, in the south, especially in the Alps, strong thunderstorms with heavy rain around 30 l/sqm, hail and gusts of wind.
CONTINUOUS RAIN/HEAVY RAIN (SEVERE WEATHER, sometimes EXTREME STORM): In the west, from NRW to Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland as well as in the extreme west and southwest of Hesse, until Thursday rich, sometimes extreme continuous rain or prolonged heavy rain, of varying intensity and interspersed with thunderstorms.
By Thursday morning, 50 to 100 l/sqm accumulated, probably around 150 l/sqm in some areas, locally up to 200 l/sqm not excluded. The probability of appearance of corresponding quantities is quite certain, but the focal points are still uncertain.
In addition, from the afternoon in the Black Forest again onset of shower-like increased continuous
rain. Precipitation amounts of 50 to 100 l/sqm are possible until the night of Friday, in some places even more. Development but still uncertain.
WIND/STORM On Wednesday, first in the west, later also in the southwest, the wind revived.
At low altitudes stiff gusts of around 55 km/h (Bft 7) are not very likely, in the mountains stormy gusts (Bft 8, up to 70 km/h), exposed storm gusts Bft 9 (around 80 km/h) are not excluded. M.Sc. Felix Dietzsch presents up-to-date information on the severe weather situation and the issued severe weather warnings in a video from the DWD TV studio (status: 13.07.2021 15:00 hrs)

This was the warning from a few pages back.

I do not think any of us should moan about our summer as at least we have only had grey clouds and chilly temps till today, no devastating floods have hit us causing awful loss of life and folks lives and homes devastated.

I'm unaware of exactly where in Germany this happened, but I visited a few places near the Rhine, where there's markings of how high flooding in the past has gone. Just passed where the Moselle, I think it's called joins. It's a big tributary, and a river in it's own right.
