Areas of rain, locally thundery, will develop across the warning area during Thursday afternoon, evening and overnight. This will be heavy at times and may lead to some localised disruption. Lightning will be an additional hazard, especially across areas south of Birmingham.

Heavy rain may lead to localised rainfall accumulations of 20-30 mm in 1-2 hours, with some places perhaps seeing 40-60 mm in 3-6 hours. This may cause some travel disruption during rush hour this evening. The threat of heavy rain will clear eastwards later in the night, clearing western parts of the warning area by around midnight.

Local Authorities affected and associated warning levels

Redcar and Cleveland, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Hartlepool

Looks like we've missed the most persistent rain with that now heading out into the north sea

Thick cloud all day has however produced frequent drizzle

That train of showers is very close but the heaviest spots are just to SE of here.

Already well over 10mm, I think the rain gauge is partly plugged but it will all be counted eventually.
It was very heavy indeed for a while.

Much better today with the sunshine already out tomorrow looks decent as well

Sunday looks a bit iffy at first before drying up then a decent day Monday with just a low chance of some isolated showers

Considering it's a bank holiday weekend it's shaping up to be fairly decent

Not difficult after about 30mm yesterday here!

Although it's still warm enough at about 18C the wind is giving an Autumnal feel again.
At least we have had a good few days of proper summer which is not always the case.

As bank holiday weekends go it's actually turning out to be better than first thought at beginning of the week.

Sunday looks pretty poor with plenty rain/showers only slowly dying out from the east late in the day, otherwise plenty dry weather with bright sunny spells.

noticed me turning on the lamps in living room more often in the late evening, soon be autumn

Absolutely beautiful here today, temperature currently 22c with next to no wind, shame about tomorrow though.

Well it wouldn't be a BH weekend without some rain :p

It should improve tomorrow afternoon once the rain moves away

A few spots here just now but the main event is still south of the Humber.

I fancy the present track takes them somewhat SE of us which would be nice as really don't need another major soak.

It's dried up in the south of the region now after torrential rain at times overnight we had a thunderstorm over town around 1am which didn't last too long but it brought some decent strikes another band of torrential rain hit around 6am all the rain now is in the north of the region slowly clearing away

For the rest of today, it should be quieter with the odd shower still possible how much this cloud can thin and break is another question

Heavy showers on and off since dark yesterday - about 18mm, and 10mm since midnight.
It has stopped now but very murky.

That 1am thunderstorm was unexpected and came out of the blue good while it lasted though with lightening and rolling thunder, cannot remember the last night storm we had

The main band of rain has cleared through a bit quicker than thought still a lot of cloud around though so further periods of rain or drizzle can't be ruled out over the next few hours

not a nice day at all today, very wet for most... still a good few hours of persistant rain for many too to lead us into the evening.

Although a drier if rather cloudy interlude for some to east of pennines.

rain pepping up again from west:

Much better next week with some pleasantly warm days and sunshine to be had, shame it is when most people are back to work.

Yellow rain warning issued

Issued at:

Valid from:
21:00 on Sat 3 Sep 2016

Valid to:

An area of heavy and locally thundery rain will move across southern parts of Northern Ireland on Saturday evening before transferring east across southern counties of Scotland and northern counties of northern England during the early hours of Sunday. The worst of the rain should clear from Northern Ireland soon after midnight and from northern England and southeast Scotland on Sunday morning. Please be aware of the risk of localised surface water flooding and disruption to transport, especially where heavy rain occurs over urban areas.

An area of low pressure will move eastwards from Northern Ireland and across the extreme north of England overnight bringing some areas of heavy rain. Although not everywhere in the area will see heavy rain, a few places may have around 15-20 mm of rain within an hour and up to 30 mm in 3-6 hours.

Covers

Durham, Northumberland, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland

The sun trying to break through the cloud now here, but a scattering of showers likely for rest of the day.

Increasingly warm in the week ahead with wed/thurs looking the warmest of the week.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
