Cold, icy start here this morning with a lovely sun rise and clear blue sky.

Turned out to be rather cloudy today after that nice sunny start... travelled through some rain showers on way home from sunderland. As for tonight it's a case of been here before way too many times in regards to will it snow or not.

High ground favoured for a good covering in places tonight, and wouldn't be suprised if many of us see falling snow at some point next 24 hours... wether this is wet slushy snow or sleet or probably just plain old cold rain is any ones guess!

Latest meto text forecast doesn't look good for snow:

This Evening and Tonight:

Any isolated showers will ease to a mainly dry evening. Cloud will thicken with spells of rain after midnight, this falling as sleet and snow over the hills whilst remaining as rain in the low-lying east. Strengthening easterly winds. Minimum Temperature -1°C.

This weekend seems to offer an easterly wind with cold rain.

It's official, I've thrown in the towel on winter 15/16.

I'm on the hunt for some milder weather now ...

Well raining here, not even any sleet mixed in :( Noticed places further south and west getting a good dumping and not with much hieght either. Would be nice to know how high you have to go to see this change to snow in our region.

looks like staying wet all day too.

This sums up our winter sleet and snow to the south and west of us whilst we are stuck with cold rain

The moor tops here were white first thing but it's all but gone now.
There has been a good deal more rain than I expected already, and it looks like more on and off until well into the night.
Almost 12mm so far - mostly rather light but the odd heavier burst.

been out driving all day, some big showers and periods of rain... bit sleet mixed in heavier bursts. Just got home to newton aycliffe and it is more sleet/hail here now.

Even i'm fed up now with the lack of snow this winter gone... hopefully next winter is better with some long chilly days with sun and frost mixed with some epic snow falls.

Pretty annoying day, all told. On the bright said, at least most of their snow has already melted.

I still put that Saturday in December above what most have seen today. And it's why I don't agree that we've had such bad luck this winter (compared to others). That was an occasion where everyone else got rain apart from us, and we got hours of snow, which remained in decent quantities for a good 36 hours, and was on grass in the garden for a good week.

To be fair you're right really, despite my moaning about a poor winter.

I'm sure I didn't see falling or settling snow two out of the last three winters, and I have seen transient falls of settling snow this winter.

I think 2009 and 2010 set the bar much higher and while I don't expect to see such prolonged snowcover and ice days like we did in those winters, even a 4 or 5 day sold spell with snow accumulation everyday would have been a decent noteworthy wintry event.

Oh and there's cold rain falling outside right now ...

This years winter has been awful here. Ok I have seen snow falling but not once have I had the chance to roll a snow ball. That must be classed as a terrible winter.

Bring on the sun and lightening like last year that was more fun.

For the south of the region it has been poor, I grant you. We've had 4 falls that have allowed snowball making (in one case, very small balls!).

it was pretty heavy, think i was right under the red part on radar... but produced mainly rain with some big flakes of snow mixed in at first.

looking less cold as we head into next week with temperatures rising each day.

Very marginal today with uppers of -4/-5 although there are some potent looking north sea showers incoming,so a chance of hail and the odd rumble of thunder.

The air starting to feel real cold now and alot more showers on radar than i thought there would be today, some real heavy ones forming some nice lines (shame i'm just east of this at present) though getting the odd hail shower form time to time.

Colder uppers advancing over our region now so if showers persit into night may be a few suprise snow falls.

A showery day across much of the country today,i suppose this is the time of year when convective/home grown showers begin to appear.

Some much colder air spreading across the region in the early hours which could give a very icy start in the morning, and hoepefully some of doctor32's surprise snowfalls.:D
